What is Dump Cake?
A dump cake is an American dessert that is similar to cobbler, but with a cake-like topping. It is typically prepared by dumping canned pie filling or fruit in a baking pan, followed by boxed cake mix and butter. Dump cakes gained their popularity in the 1950’s when the use of cake mixes became widespread. Since then, there are lots of different variations and ways to make dump cakes! Ingredient Notes
Below is a brief overview of each ingredient needed for this cake mix easy peach cobbler recipe. To see the printable recipe card with amounts and directions, scroll to the bottom of this post.
- Canned Peaches– for this recipe, I use 2 cans sliced peaches in heavy syrup. Do NOT drain the syrup as you will need this to make the cake. Light syrup peaches work too.
- Vanilla Extract– make sure you use pure vanilla extract as it adds the most flavor.
- Cake Mix– any brand will work, I love using yellow cake mix or even spiced cake mix. You’ll use the dry cake mix, not the ingredients listed on the back of the box. I use a 15.25 ounce box.
- Butter– salted butter or unsalted butter work, however, I love using salted butter as it balances the sweetness a bit more.
- Cinnamon– ground cinnamon brings the warm spice throughout. Feel free to increase or omit if desired.
Substitutions and Variations
There are so many ways to change this up to make it your own. Here are some great options:
- In place of yellow cake mix, use French Vanilla Cake mix, spice cake, white cake, etc. Any type and any brand will work.
- To make this gluten free, simply use a gluten free labelled cake mix.
- Nutmeg or allspice can be used in place of the ground cinnamon.
- Add in some chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts for more of a crunch and texture change.
- Peach Pie Filling can be used in place of canned peaches.
- Change up the flavors by using canned apples/blueberries/raspberries, etc.
How to make Peach Cobbler Dump Cake with Canned Peaches
Making this peach cobbler with cake mix is incredibly easy and only requires one 9×13 baking pan! For full directions, scroll to the printable recipe card.
- Prepare pan– you’ll want to grease a 9×13 and preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
- Dump in your peaches– no need to drain those cans, simply dump into your prepared pan and add the vanilla extract evenly around.
- Sprinkle cake mix– make sure you coat the peaches in a single layer and press the cake mix down a bit to even it all out. Do not stir.
- Add butter– grate or cut your butter into thin slices and place them on top of the cake mix in an even layer. I usually thinly slice the butter as it’s easier than dirtying my grater.
- Bake and Serve– bake in your preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve in a bowl with a scoop of ice-cream or on it’s own. Enjoy!
Tips and Tricks
Here are some tips for success I have learned a long the way to ensure a perfectly delicious cake each and every time!
- Do NOT stir the cake! Stirring the cake affects the texture once baked and won’t have as tasty of an end result. Simply dump into baking dish, layer, and bake!
- Do NOT drain the peach juice! So many times, I have had people message me asking what went wrong, only to find out they drained the peaches and didn’t have the extra liquid needed. Make sure you use that flavorful heavy syrup!!
- Slice or grate the butter thin so you can easily spread it over the cake mix. You don’t want to have spots missing the butter, otherwise you’ll have dry clumps of cake mix to eat even after it is baked. Spreading the butter evenly results in a consistently crisp, flavorful crust topping.
- Do NOT prepare the cake mix as directed on the box. Simply sprinkle the mix onto the peaches.
- Fresh peaches aren’t ideal in this recipe since they don’t have the heavy syrup and liquid needed to get the cake fully set up.
Serving Suggestions
My go-to serving method is to scoop the cake using a large spoon into bowls. From there, we love adding a scoop of ice cream with some toasted nuts. You can choose to enjoy this cake on it’s own without ice cream, or served with some whipped cream.
Being that this is a dump cake with canned peaches as the base, it is not a cake you can slice and serve. Plan to use a spoon to serve regardless if using ice cream, whipped cream, or on it’s own.

Storing Leftovers
Once cooled, leftovers can be covered or placed in an airtight container and stored in the fridge up to 4 days. I don’t recommend storing at room temperature due to the fact the topping gets soggy and loses its crispness. To reheat, place in microwave heating in 30 second increments until heated through. You can also reheat in the oven at 350 degrees for about 10-15 minutes.

I made this and added cinnamon sugar and some cinnamon itself on top then spooned the melted butter on. I love the flavor as cobblers usually have it in them.

Pat says
recipe states melted butter, directions state grate or slice and place on top. which is correct?
Kristin says
Sorry for the confusion! I typically slice small and place on top. It’s all based on preference. You can grate if preferred, it melts a little more evenly, however, I don’t like dirtying up extra kitchen supplies! Enjoy!
