Why You’ll Love this Classic French Toast Recipe

With so many French Toast recipes out there, you’re probably wondering why THIS one is the best! Here are some great reasons you need to give this recipe a try:

    • Easy to Make– using pantry staple ingredients and only about 10 minutes, you can have this meal made in no time!
    • Packed with Flavor– fluffy bread coated in a cinnamon vanilla mixture and topped with syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit. What’s not to love about that?!
    • Customizable– feel free to use any bread desired (see options below). You can also increase the cinnamon to bring more warm spice throughout and have fun with the toppings, so many great options!
    • A Great Way to Revive Stale Bread– no more having to toss that loaf of stale bread or make croutons, use it in this delicious recipe and bring it back to life!

Easy French Toast Recipe Ingredients Needed

Below is a brief overview of each ingredient needed. To see exact amounts, scroll below to printable recipe card.

    • Eggs– you’ll need four large eggs at room temperature.
    • Milk– any type of milk works including non-dairy options (oat milk or almond milk are great options). We love using whole milk as it’s the creamiest, however, use what you have on hand.
    • Flour– all purpose flour is the key ingredient to perfect French toast. This helps create a batter that makes the toast fluffy and perfectly coated each and every time.
    • Sugar– white granulated sugar adds the perfect amount of sweetness throughout.
    • Vanilla Extract– use pure vanilla extract versus imitation for the best flavor addition.
    • Ground Cinnamon– ground cinnamon adds the warm spice flavor in each bite. Feel free to increase or decrease based on tastes. You can even add in some ground cloves or nutmeg.
    • Bread– this is the most important ingredient as it’s the base of the whole recipe. I prefer using Texas Toast, however, there are lots of options to choose from. See bread notes below.
all the ingredients needed to make french toast.

How to make this Easy French Toast Recipe

    1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, flour, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
    2. Pour batter into a pie plate, shallow bowl, or shallow dish to make it easier to dip bread into.
    3. Heat a griddle or frying pan over medium heat.
    4. Dip a slice of bread, coating both sides in the batter.
    5. Place the coated bread in a single layer on the griddle/frying pan and cook 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
    6. Remove slice and continue until all bread has been cooked. Store cooked bread on wire rack or baking sheet. Serve immediately with toppings desired.

    Best Bread for French Toast

    • Any type of thick bread will work in this recipe. I love using Texas Toast, but you can also use leftover homemade bread. Even bread that has become slightly stale works great.
    • Thick slices of French Bread, Brioche Bread, or Italian Loaf work great! You can find lots of great options in the bakery section of your local grocery store.
    • Avoid using thin slices of sandwich bread as they tend to get mushy and fall apart once dipped in the milk vanilla mixture.
    • Some of my blog followers have told me they used my Snickerdoodle Bread and Apple Fritter Bread to make their French Toast and it was incredible. I haven’t tried it personally, but it sounds like pure perfection!

Topping Options for Homemade French Toast

The best part of serving French Toast is when you can add all your favorite toppings! Below are a few of our favorite way’s to doctor these up!

    • Maple Syrup (or simple pancake syrup)
    • Fresh Berries or Fruit (banana slices, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, or blueberries are favorites)
    • Chocolate Chips
    • Almonds
    • Whipped Cream
    • Hazelnut Spread (Nutella)
    • Apple Butter
    • Instant Pot Mixed Berry Jam

    Make Ahead and Storage Instructions

    • If preparing ahead of time, make the batter as directed and cover. Place in refrigerator up to 2 days. Remove from fridge and dip bread slices into mixture once ready to cook.
    • To freeze, allow toast to cool completely before placing in a freezer safe container or bag in the freezer up to 3 months. Allow to thaw before reheating.
    • If storing in the fridge, once toast is fully cooled, place in a storage bag or container up to 5 days.
    • To reheat, you can place in the microwave in 30 second increments until heated through. You can also heat in the air fryer at 325 degrees for a few minutes, toast French toast in the toaster, or in a skillet over medium heat for a few minutes. So many great options to use up any leftover French Toast.

What is the purpose of adding flour to the batter, please? I am old as dirt and this is the first time that I’ve seen that addition.

Great question! The flour thickens the egg mixture up to make it more of a batter and sticks to the bread more. It improves the texture, helps give the toast a crispier outer layer, and helps prevent a soggy end result!

I use raisin bread and put 2-3squished bananas plus 3 eggs into a blender. After blending I dip each slice into the mixture. Cook as usual. I used to make an entire loaf, put the cooked pieces back into the loaf wrapper and pop into the freezer. Kids could take out a slice or two, pop into the micro. .. whala, breakfast.
