Ingredient Notes for Chocolate Chip Scones
See printable recipe card at bottom of post for exact ingredient amounts and directions.
- Buttermilk– this reacts with the leaveners to give the scones their perfect rise. If you don’t have any buttermilk on hand, see my substitution below.
- Sugar– this adds the perfect amount of sweetness throughout.
- Vanilla Extract– opt for pure extract versus imitation as it adds the most flavor.
- Egg– this helps bind everything together. You’ll use a large egg.
- Flour– for this recipe, you will use both all purpose flour and whole wheat flour.
- Baking Powder/ Salt– this gives the homemade scones their rise, ensure freshness by changing your baking powder out every six months.
- Butter– you’ll need chilled butter, I use unsalted butter to reduce sodium, but salted butter works too.
- Chocolate Chips– I use semi-sweet chocolate chips, but milk chocolate chip, dark chocolate chips, or mini chocolate chips work great too.
- Egg White– this is to brush on top to give the scones their perfect golden brown color and crispness.
How to make this Easy Chocolate Chip Scone Recipe
- In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk, sugar, vanilla extract, and egg. Set aside.
- In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender, pastry cutter, or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse meal. A food processor works too, but it often overworks the scone dough and can cause the scones to be dense.
- Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
- Add milk mixture and stir until just combined.
- Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray.
- Place dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead about 4 times. *Yes, mixture is somewhat sticky, make sure you flour your surface!!
- Place dough onto prepared baking sheet and form into a 9-inch circle, about 3/4″ thick.
- Using a sprayed pizza cutter, slice dough into 12 slices.
- Brush egg white on top of dough and sprinkle sugar evenly.
- Bake in a preheated oven, 375, for about 18-22 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
How to store Chocolate Chip Scones
The great part about scones is that they can easily be stored for when needed. Whether that is the day of, a few days later, or even a few months, they refrigerate, freeze, and keep perfectly! Here are some tips:
- Although these are best enjoyed the day of, you can store them at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- If refrigerating them, place in an airtight container in the fridge up to 5 days.
- To freeze, make sure they are fully cooled. Place in a freezer safe bag or container for up to 3 months.
- You can freeze the scones before they are baked. Cut the scones into triangles and place on the baking sheet. Freeze the scones until they are frozen solid. Place the scones in a freezer bag or container. When ready to bake, remove the scones from the freezer and preheat the oven. Place the scones on a baking sheet with parchment paper and bake. You may need to add a few additional minutes to the bake time.
Buttermilk Substitution
If you’re like me and never seem to have buttermilk on hand, use this handy trick each time and you’re set!
- Place 1 tablespoon white vinegar into a glass measuring cup.
- Fill the glass measuring cup up to the 1 cup mark and allow mixture to sit for about 5 minutes.
- Once 5 minutes has passed, you may notice the milk curdling, this will be your buttermilk substitute. For this specific recipe, you will use 3/4 cup of the 1 cup mixture.
Tips for your first time making scones
If you’re new to scones and feeling overwhelmed, I promise they are easy and something you will love making once you get the hang of it. Here are some tips for success:
- Avoid over working the dough! Use a pastry blender for the dough versus using a food processor as you have more control and can stop working the dough once combined.
- To obtain the perfect texture, keep the dough as chilled as possible. In fact, for perfect results, refrigerate the dough for 10 minutes prior to baking. I sometimes will place the dough in the refrigerator the night before I need it and let it chill overnight.
- Ensure your baking powder is fresh by changing it out every 6 months. This is the key to the perfect texture and rise, so you don’t want to use expired baking powder.
- Make sure your butter is cold. Don’t let it get to room temperature. In fact, you can even freeze it if desired. This helps give the flakiness to your scones.
- For an added sweetness, you can sprinkle some brown sugar on top of the scones either just before baked or just after while still warm.
