Hash Brown Potato Bake is a classic casserole dish associated with comfort and family. Packed with flavor, this dish compliments any meal!

tender potatoes with a cheesy mixture and crunchy cereal topping combine into this hash brown potato bake

You may have heard this dish called Funeral Potatoes in lieu of Hash Brown Potato Bake. Funeral potatoes is a traditional potato casserole that is popular in the American Intermountain West and Midwest. It is often called “funeral” potatoes because it is commonly served as a side dish during traditional after-funeral dinners, but it is also served at potlucks, and other social gatherings, sometimes with different names.

In my family, we always called it our potato bake, so I didn’t want to change that up! Plus, funeral potatoes sounded sad to me and this dish is anything but!

When I was a kid, my mom would make this dish for any potluck or gathering. It was (and still is) a favorite of mine!

The topping definitely is a favorite of mine. The crunchy cereal layer compliments the creamy potato mixture and combines into a dish you don’t want to pass up!

Looking for other side dish options to serve as well?? Check these favorites out:

    Smoked Deviled Eggs

    Mom’s Asian Ramen Coleslaw

You can also buy the frozen hash browns that have the diced onions and peppers mixed in for added flavor! My mom started doing that years ago and now, its our go to method of enjoying these!

Hash Brown Potato Bake is a scrumptious side dish that compliments any meal! Be sure to print the recipe below and give it a try!

I am definitely trying this. In our family, we have a dish called Crazy Potatoes that is very similar to this recipe. It asks for a can of Cheddar Cheese soup though. 😀

Ohmygosh, Kristin… this is my favorite comfort food in the world! Well, I add bacon to mine, because.. well, it’s BACON! You don’t need an explanation for that, do you? 😉

Plenty of salt in the soup… they don’t need any additional! Instead of the cornflakes, I just sprinkle a little dill on top.

What kind of frozen hash browns? The shredded kind?

I use the kind called potatoes o’brien (it has the peppers mixed in for added flavor), otherwise you can use the hash browns that are in small cubes 🙂

      Can you use frosted flakes?

You could try that, however, it may change the taste due to the additional sugar in frosted flakes 🙂

Do you think you could use rice chex or crispies instead of corn flakes?

Possibly rice chex will work, I don’t think the krispies will since they are so small. Maybe even corn chex?

If you hover over the picture, you should see the “pin it” button? I just double checked to make sure it’s working and everything looks good. There is also a Pinterest button on the top right corner 😉
Let us know if it still isn’t working and we can see if we can send you the pin 🙂
        Thanks!!!
