Oreo Brownies Ingredients Notes
For exact ingredient amounts and step by step directions, see printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Flour– you’ll want to use all purpose flour for this recipe.
- Salt– if you use salted butter, you can omit this ingredient.
- Cocoa Powder– this brings a lot of the chocolate flavor to the brownies. I love using Dutch Process Cocoa Powder as it has a deeper flavor, however, unsweetened works great too.
- Butter– I use unsalted butter at room temperature.
- Oil– vegetable oil or canola oil work best.
- Sugar– white granulated sugar adds the sweetness to these tasty brownie bars.
- Vanilla Extract– try to use pure vanilla versus imitation as it adds more flavor.
- Eggs– at room temperature is best as it combines into the batter easier. You will also need an egg yolk too.
- Chocolate Chips– I use milk chocolate chips and white chocolate chips, however, you can also use semi-sweet or peanut butter chips.
- Oreo Cookies– you’ll use about 15 Oreo’s and can chop them up or crush them depending on what you prefer. I use classic, but feel free to use any flavor variety desired. Peanut butter, mint, birthday cake Oreo’s, or chocolate are all great options.
How to make this Oreo Brownies Recipe
- Preheat oven to 350° degrees and line a 9×9 baking pan with parchment paper. (Leave the paper hanging off the sides so you can lift the brownies up.) Spray lightly with non-stick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl combine the flour, salt and cocoa powder, mix and set aside. In a medium sauce pan add the butter, oil and ½ cup of sugar and stir until the butter is completely melted. Remove from the heat.
- In another large mixing bowl add the two eggs and the 1 egg yolk, add the remaining 1 cup of sugar and whisk until everything is mixed together. Add in the vanilla and stir again. Slowly add the melted butter mixture and stir constantly until everything is combined and mixed.
- Add in the dry ingredients that was set aside in the beginning. Mix together with a rubber spatula until everything is combined. Add in the chocolate chips and crushed up Oreo cookies and gently fold until everything is mixed together.
- Add the brownie mix into the prepared baking dish, scraping the edges of the bowl to get everything. Add some extra crushed Oreo’s on top for extra flavor! Bake for 30 minutes in the oven or until the toothpick trick is clean.
- Remove the pan from the oven and let the brownies cool completely (for about 1 hour) before lifting the parchment paper up and slicing the delicious Oreo brownies.
Variations
- Instead of using classic cream Oreo’s, you can play around with different flavors such as peanut butter Oreos, mint Oreos, Holiday, birthday cake, chocolate, or red velvet.
- Change up the chocolate chip flavors depending on desired tastes. You can use dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate chips, peanut butter, caramel, or even toffee chips.
How to store and freeze brownies with Oreo cookies
- Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. You can also cut the brownies into individual portions and wrap in plastic. This prevents them from drying out.
- These brownies freeze perfectly. Let the brownies cool completely. If you are wrapping an entire pan of brownies, carefully lift out of the pan and wrap in plastic wrap AND aluminum foil. If you are freezing individual brownie squares, wrap in plastic wrap and store in a freezer bag or freezer container. The brownies will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. Allow to thaw before serving.
FAQ’s
Can I make these Oreo Chocolate Chip Brownies in a 9×13 baking pan?
Yes! However, since this recipe as written is best for a 9×9 or 8×8 pan, I recommend doubling the recipe for a 9×13 so they aren’t too thin and stay thick and fudgy.
What is the best way to cut these to get clean pieces every time?
The key to success is to let the brownies cool completely before slicing. Using parchment paper in your pan helps this as well as you can lift it directly out of the pan and slice. Use a sharp knife and clean the knife between each cut.
Can I use a shortcut brownie mix instead?
Absolutely! If you choose to use a box brownie mix, make the brownies as directed on the box and simply add in the chocolate chips and chopped Oreo pieces. You’ll end with just as delicious brownies, just the shortcut version!
