- Oreo Sandwich Cookies- Crushed Oreos create the classic "dirt" topping and add rich chocolate flavor.
- Hot Fudge- Poured over the cake so it seeps into the holes for extra chocolate flavor and moisture.
- Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix- Creates the creamy layer that gives this chocolate pudding dirt cake its rich flavor.
- Milk- Whole milk works best for preparing the pudding mixture and creating a smooth, creamy filling.
- Cool Whip- Folded into the pudding for a light and fluffy topping that balances the chocolate layers.

How to Make Oreo Dirt Cake
This easy dirt cake recipe comes together in just a few simple steps.

Step 1. Prepare the cake mix according to the package directions and bake in a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 2. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes.

Step 3. Using the end of a spoon, poke holes all over the cake. Warm the hot fudge until pourable, then drizzle it over the cake so it seeps into the holes.

Step 4. Allow the cake to cool completely to room temperature.

Step 5. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the chocolate pudding mix with the milk until smooth.

Step 6. Before the pudding fully sets, pour it evenly over the cooled cake. Place the cake in the refrigerator and chill for about 20 minutes.

Step 7. In a medium bowl, whisk the remaining pudding mix with the milk. Refrigerate for about 10 minutes until set, then fold in the thawed Cool Whip.

Step 8. Stir in about ¾ of the crushed Oreo cookies.

Step 9. Spread the pudding mixture evenly over the cake.

Step 10. Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos over the cake. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to enjoy.
Baking Tips
- Crushing Oreos: You can use a food processor to pulse the cookies into fine crumbs, or place them in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
- Chill for Best Flavor: This dirt cake tastes even better after chilling. Let it chill in fridge for at least 2 hours so the layers set and the flavors blend.
- Make It Fun for Kids: Add gummy worms, candy bugs, or Peeps to create the classic dirt-and-worms look.
- Add Oreos Just Before Serving: For the best texture, sprinkle the crushed Oreos on top right before serving so they stay crisp.
Storage
- Make Ahead: This dessert is perfect for making ahead. Prepare it up to 24 hours in advance and keep it covered in the refrigerator. For the best texture, add the crushed Oreos just before serving so they stay crisp.
- Refrigerator: Store leftovers covered with plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Freezer: Freezing isn't recommended since the pudding and whipped topping don't thaw well. However, leftover pieces can be frozen and enjoyed like a frozen treat.

I made this for Thanksgiving and my family loved it. Very moist and tasty. I will be making it again!
Kristin Hayes says
Yay! Glad you enjoyed!!
Rienie McLellan says
how do you make the hot fudge.
Kristin Hayes says
For this recipe, I like to keep it simple and buy the jarred hot fudge from the store. I use Smucker’s Brand most of the time!
C says
I use this recipe frequently. It really is the best. I like to make little tweaks to make it festive for holidays. Red velvet cake for Christmas with green food dye in the cool whip and white chocolate pudding. Or my newest accident of pumpkin. ☺️ I found out I had no eggs, so I made the chocolate cake with a cup of pumpkin instead and a tsp of apple pie seasoning. Then layered with pumpkin spice pudding, and topped with cream cheese pudding with the cool whip. I just happened to have Halloween Oreos on hand. No matter what version I make with this recipe, it turns out perfectly delicious.
Kristin Hayes says
Yay!! Love hearing this and love the variations! Great ideas!!
Cindy B says
I was confused by the instruction to use the “back” of a spoon to make the holes in the cake, so I read through the reviews and saw that someone else was also confused by that instruction. Your response that you use the handle of a wooden spoon cleared up the confusion, but it would be helpful for others if that instruction was provided in the recipe instead of the use of the “back” of a spoon. That aside, the cake was deeeeeelicious! I did incorporate some of your suggested substitutions and used vanilla pudding to pour over the cake/holes and used Mint Oreos for the topping. Great recipe!
Kristin says
Sorry for the confusion, I will get that clarified in the directions right now! Glad you enjoyed!!
Cami says
This looked delicious! I like to follow the recipe as written as I’m not the most experienced baker. I was so proud of myself! This turned out perfectly! My family ate it up! Thanks for sharing!😊
Kristin says
Yay!! Love hearing this and so glad you all enjoyed!
Diane says
I find a spoon or anything else makes the cake soggy. I use toothpicks and poke a lot of small holes in cake. Don’t make too many holes, just look and use your judgement. I put Ghirardelli Carmel on very top before final Oreo crumbs too. Came out like an Oreo turtle cake
Kristin says
Oh yum! Great tip and sounds delicious!
Jessica says
Very confused on the part with the pudding. Are you supposed to follow the directions on the pudding mix box or just mix it with cold milk? If following your directions, I would assume mix it with cold milk, but that leaves me with chocolate milk. When folding in the whip cream, it just turned into creamy whip cream. I am very confused because I followed the recipe exactly how it was written.
Kristin Hayes says
You combine the pudding mix with the cold milk and once thickened, put it onto the cake. Make sure you use Instant pudding so it sets up quickly!
Juqetta Lawson says
I want to make this for Christmas this year but I need to double the recipe do I double everything and instead of the milk could I use heavy cream
Kristin says
Yep! If doubling, you will double all ingredients and use (2) 9×13 pans! As for using heavy cream in place of the milk, that should work great too! Enjoy!
Heather says
Making this now and had to bring up the recipe to see if there were comments on the crushed Oreos. The Ingredients List has 30 Oreos in Pudding Layer. The Instructions put the Oreos under Topping and mention the “pudding mixture.” I am assuming that I do put the Oreos in the whipped topping based on the explanation posted prior to the recipe.
Kristin says
Good catch! I had the Oreo addition in the wrong spot on the recipe card. I have corrected that now! You are correct about the location of where and when to add the Oreos, hope you enjoy!
Bobbi Jo Wallace says
Do you crush up the Oreos whole or do you remove the filling before crushing?
Kristin Hayes says
Crush up the Oreos whole, the cream filling adds a yummy creaminess!! Enjoy!
Diane says
I find a spoon or anything else makes the cake soggy. I use toothpicks and poke a lot of small holes in cake. Don’t make too many holes, just look and use your judgement.
Kristin says
Great tip! Thanks!
Fancy Tate says
I am in the middle of making this and am confused on the meaning of the back of the spoon to poke holes. Can anyone help me with this fairly quick?
Kristin says
Sorry for the delayed response. You will want to use the back of a spoon to poke holes in the cake. This allows the pudding to fill the holes and be included in each bite eaten. I use a wooden spoon and use the handle to poke holes. Hope you enjoy!
Dakota says
What should I switch the fudge out for if wanting to do a yellow version? Golden Oreos, vanilla pudding, yellow cake mix.
Kristin says
Great question! I would either omit, or use caramel as that compliments the yellow version really well. Should be tasty!! Enjoy and keep me posted!
Julie says
luv this!!!!! made for company event and I see it will be a hit!
Kristin says
Yay!! Love hearing this! Glad you enjoyed!!
Crista says
Ooo, yummy! You should try using marshmallow cream instead of fudge. But caramel sounds delicious too!
Kristin says
Great idea too!! I’ll try that, thanks!
