Dirt cake has been a favorite at potlucks and family gatherings for decades. It became popular in the 1980s as a playful dessert often served with gummy worms or layered in cups. With layers of chocolate cake, pudding, hot fudge, crushed Oreos, and Cool Whip, this dirt cake with Oreos is a fun dessert both kids and adults love. What is Oreo Dirt Cake?

Oreo dirt cake is a layered dessert made with crushed Oreos, pudding, and a creamy topping. This version is baked instead of the traditional no-bake dessert, giving it a rich, chocolatey texture.

    Why You’ll Love This Cake

    • Simple ingredients: made with cake mix, pudding, Oreos, and Cool Whip
    • Perfect make-ahead dessert: even better after chilling, just like my Chocolate Eclair Cake.
    • Chocolate lovers’ dream: layers of cake, fudge, pudding, and Oreos
    • Great for parties and potlucks: an easy Oreo dessert for a crowd, just like my Chocolate Peanut Butter Oreo Dessert.

    Ingredient Notes

Full printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

All the ingredients needed to make an Oreo Dirt Cake.
    • Chocolate Cake Mix- A boxed mix keeps this dessert quick and easy. You can also use homemade chocolate cake like my Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake if you prefer.
    • Oreo Sandwich Cookies- Crushed Oreos create the classic "dirt" topping and add rich chocolate flavor.
    • Hot Fudge- Poured over the cake so it seeps into the holes for extra chocolate flavor and moisture.
    • Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix- Creates the creamy layer that gives this chocolate pudding dirt cake its rich flavor.
    • Milk- Whole milk works best for preparing the pudding mixture and creating a smooth, creamy filling.
    • Cool Whip- Folded into the pudding for a light and fluffy topping that balances the chocolate layers.

    Variations

    • Dirt Pudding (No Cake): Skip the cake and layer pudding with crushed Oreos in cups or a trifle dish for a fun no-bake dirt dessert.
    • Peanut Butter Dirt Cake: Add peanut butter to the pudding layer or try my Chocolate Peanut Butter Dirt Cake for a rich chocolate-peanut butter version.
    • Halloween Dirt Cake: Top with gummy worms for the classic dirt and worms dessert kids love.
    • Easter Dirt Cake: Decorate with Peeps, candy eggs, or pastel sprinkles for a festive Easter dessert that's kid-friendly.
    • Mint Oreo Dirt Cake: Swap regular Oreos for mint Oreos for a cool chocolate-mint twist.

How to Make Oreo Dirt Cake

This easy dirt cake recipe comes together in just a few simple steps.

Chocolate cake batter spread into a prepared 9x13 baking pan.

Step 1. Prepare the cake mix according to the package directions and bake in a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 2. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes.

Hot fudge spread on top of poked holes in a chocolate cake.

Step 3. Using the end of a spoon, poke holes all over the cake. Warm the hot fudge until pourable, then drizzle it over the cake so it seeps into the holes.

Step 4. Allow the cake to cool completely to room temperature.

Step 5. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the chocolate pudding mix with the milk until smooth.

Step 6. Before the pudding fully sets, pour it evenly over the cooled cake. Place the cake in the refrigerator and chill for about 20 minutes.

Cool whip folded into pudding mixture.

Step 7. In a medium bowl, whisk the remaining pudding mix with the milk. Refrigerate for about 10 minutes until set, then fold in the thawed Cool Whip.

Pudding and cool whip combined in a mixing bowl.

Step 8. Stir in about ¾ of the crushed Oreo cookies.

Chocolate pudding mixture spread on top of chocolate cake to make an Oreo Dirt Cake.

Step 9. Spread the pudding mixture evenly over the cake.

Oreo Dirt Cake assembled in a 9x13 baking pan and ready to serve.

Step 10. Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos over the cake. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to enjoy.

    Baking Tips

    • Crushing Oreos: You can use a food processor to pulse the cookies into fine crumbs, or place them in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
    • Chill for Best Flavor: This dirt cake tastes even better after chilling. Let it chill in fridge for at least 2 hours so the layers set and the flavors blend.
    • Make It Fun for Kids: Add gummy worms, candy bugs, or Peeps to create the classic dirt-and-worms look.
    • Add Oreos Just Before Serving: For the best texture, sprinkle the crushed Oreos on top right before serving so they stay crisp.

Looking for another easy Oreo dessert? My slutty brownie cups are a baked option with the same cookie and chocolate layers.

    Storage

    • Make Ahead: This dessert is perfect for making ahead. Prepare it up to 24 hours in advance and keep it covered in the refrigerator. For the best texture, add the crushed Oreos just before serving so they stay crisp.
    • Refrigerator: Store leftovers covered with plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
    • Freezer: Freezing isn't recommended since the pudding and whipped topping don't thaw well. However, leftover pieces can be frozen and enjoyed like a frozen treat.

    Oreo Dirt Cake Recipe FAQs

Can you make dirt cake ahead of time?

Yes. This dessert is actually better when made in advance because chilling allows the layers to set and the flavors to blend together.

How do you crush Oreos for dirt cake?

Place the cookies in a zip-top bag and crush them with a rolling pin, or pulse them in a food processor until they form fine crumbs.

What pudding is best for a dirt cake recipe with pudding?

Chocolate pudding is the most common choice because it gives the dessert its rich flavor, but other flavors can be used depending on preference.

Do we scrape off the cream from the Oreos or crush them as is? I feel like it would be way too sweet with the cream.

Is it better to follow the directions on the box for the pudding mix? All the pudding boxes my store has is 3.9oz. So it asks for 2 cups of milk

Yes, that would most likely be the safest option using the boxed directions if bigger boxes! Enjoy!

should the box pudding size be just 1.5oz? double that seems like way too much.

Do you use two (2) Boxes of pudding mixes ? Because it tells you to mix one of the box of chocolate pudding mix and pour it over the cake and put it aside, then mix the other box of chocolate pudding with the whipped topping and put it over the cake.
