The ULTIMATE Easy BBQ Baked Beans recipe
Growing up, my mom used to make these beans for any parties, BBQ’s, picnics, etc. Every time she would make these, I would always scoop tons onto my plate. They have definitely been a favorite of mine for years!!
Not only are these packed with flavor, but they are incredibly simple to make as well. The great part is, these can be prepped ahead of time and put into the refrigerator. Once needed, pop into the oven and they are ready in no time!
This recipe can be doubled and put into a 9×13 baking pan if serving a lot of people or kept as is and made in an 8×8 pan, your choice!
Ingredients needed for these Easy BBQ Baked Beans
- Baked Beans

*See recipe card below for exact measurements
How to prepare:
- Grease an 8×8 baking pan.
- Mix together the beans, brown sugar, dry mustard, and ketchup.

- Place baking pan in a preheated oven, 325, and bake for about 2 hours.
Tips for the BEST BBQ Baked Beans
Don’t skimp on the beans! Use a good, quality canned bean such as Bush’s. You can pick any flavor they offer, but Bush’s brand is packed with flavor as is, so once you add the extra ingredients to them, you’ll have a mouthwatering dish!
Don’t forget to drain the cans of beans a bit prior to adding them to the dish. This will help avoid runny beans, which can be hard to scoop!
Cook low and slow! If you get in a bind and need to cook these for a shorter duration, that works, but trust the time and allow the flavors to truly meld together!
Don’t be afraid to add in extra additions! Extra bacon (perhaps even jalapeno flavored), onions, jalapenos, green onions on top, etc.

Does not look like an 8 x 8 pan in picture.
Kristin
Yep, I doubled the recipe and made it in a 9×13 (which is shown in the picture)
Lauren
If I’m doubling or tripling the recipe do I just double or triple each ingredient?
Kristin
Typically, yes, but I have found that to be a lot of sugar/ketchup. I typically double this by doubling the beans and then doing 1 1/2 the ingredients versus double. Enjoy!
Sally Murphy
Do you drain the Bush’s beans before you put them in?
Kristin
I have done it both ways and its just as tasty. I typically prefer to drain as much as a can before preparing though! Enjoy!
Sue
If you wanted to cook in crock pot. How long would you need it to be on – High or Low??Having a barbecue tomorrow and need to know soon!! Thanks!!
Kristin
If in a crockpot, put on high for about 4 hours or low for about 6-8 hours! Enjoy!
Emily
So if I’m doubling the recipe to make it it a 9×13 dish do I cook for longer than 2 hours?!
Kristin
Nope, you’re just cooking the bacon basically, as well as warming the beans up, so 2 hours is perfect whether one batch or two!
Ashley
I cooked my bacon ahead of time on accident. So should I still bake it in the oven for 2 hours?
Kristin
No problem at all!! I would decrease the time to about an hour, but its not a problem to go longer! Just eye it until its all bubbly and warmed through!
Shannon
Can these be made a day ahead of time and then reheated/warmed in a crock pot the day of?
Kristin
For sure! I have done that several times and it is great!
Germaine Therrien
says to put in a 8×8 pan, but picture shows it’s 9×11 pan.Which one is it?
Kristin
Yep, 8 x 8 is perfect. I doubled the recipe for the picture because I had gone to a BBQ and needed to bring a bigger dish. Enjoy!
Sara

Almost exactly how I’ve been making them for years. I add a little chopped green pepper & onion. My family’s favorite.
Kristin
Great idea on the peppers and onion!!! So glad they are your family’s favorite as well!!
Suzanne Mccaw
Our family made a similar dish but add chopped green onions, celery and green peppers. Drain beans first. Add prepared mustard and brown sugar in proportion desired as to tartness or sweetness. Do not add ketchup! Finish as u said. I cover mine with foil for part of baking.
Kristin
Oh yum!! I love the changes you do!! Ill need to try that next time, 🙂
