    Original Fantasy Fudge Recipe

If you’re looking for an easy-to-make, creamy and delicious chocolate fudge recipe, then this is the recipe to try. It is a no-fail recipe that has been around for many generations! In fact, it is a recipe I grew up enjoying whenever my mom made several batches around the Holidays.

She would double or even triple the recipe to get six to nine pounds and cut the fudge into small pieces. It made the perfect addition to her Holiday goodie trays that would get passed out to all the neighbors and friends nearby!

    What is Fantasy Fudge?

Fantasy fudge, also known as chocolate marshmallow fudge or marshmallow creme fudge, is a classic holiday sweet treat. Creamy and smooth, the rich chocolate squares literally melt in the mouth. Normally, fudge is made from cream, sugar, and butter, and the cooking process is slightly complex. Fantasy fudge, on the other hand, is very easy to make and very hard to get wrong. The original recipe came from the back of the Kraft Marshmallow Creme Jar! Since then, they have slightly changed their recipe to use bakers chocolate instead of chocolate chips, but this classic recipe is still my favorite!

Ingredients Needed for Fantasy Fudge Original Recipe

Scroll below for printable recipe card with exact amounts and directions.

    • Sugar
    • Margarine or Butter
    • Evaporated Milk- you won’t need the whole can.
    • Chocolate Chips- semisweet chocolate chips are best
    • Marshmallow Fluff- typically located in the baking section of your grocery store, look for the jar marshmallow creme.
    • Nuts- optional
    • Vanilla Extract- try to use pure versus imitation

all the ingredients needed to make fantasy fudge.

How to make the Original Fantasy Fudge recipe

    1. Combine sugar, margarine, and milk in a large saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a full rolling boil, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon.
    2. Continue boiling 5 minutes, over medium heat, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. Leave on heat until the mixture registers 234°F on a candy thermometer.
    3. Remove from heat and stir in semi-sweet chocolate chips until melted.
    4. Add marshmallow cream, 1 cup chopped nuts (if using), and vanilla. Mix until well blended.
    5. Pour mixture into a greased prepared pan, (13×9 inch baking dish).
    6. Cool at room temperature and cut into squares.

step by step on how to make marshmallow creme fudge.

How to make Fantasy Fudge in the microwave

    1. Microwave butter until it has melted. Then whisk in sugar and milk. Microwave this mixture on high for 3 minutes; stir, and then microwave on high for 2 more minutes. Mix again, and microwave for an additional 3 minutes. Now measure the temperature. You’re looking for the mixture to be 234 degrees. Microwave 1 to 2 minutes more (until that temperature has been reached).
    2. Add the chocolate chips. Stir vigorously until the chocolate has melted and the mixture is smooth.
    3. Stir in the marshmallow creme and vanilla extract. Keep stirring until you no longer see any white streaks.
    4. The mixture should be creamy and smooth!
    5. Spray a 9×9-inch square pan with nonstick spray (or 9×13 pan for thinner fudge). Scrape the fantasy fudge into the pan and smooth the top with a rubber spatula to make it even.
    6. Give the fudge about an hour to cool and solidify. Then it’s time to cut it into pieces.

    Storage

    • If you are planning on eating the fudge within 2 weeks, you can store fantasy fudge in an airtight container at room temperature. Separate the layers with parchment paper or wax paper. You can also store fudge in the refrigerator for about 2-3 weeks. Again, an airtight container with separated layers is best.
    • To freeze: Wrap the fully set fudge in plastic wrap and then transfer it to a freezer storage bag. Freeze for up to 2 months and thaw in the fridge.

Tips for the BEST Fantasy Fudge

    • This recipe can be made gluten free by simply using gluten free chocolate chips found in the baking aisle of the grocery store
    • Feel free to omit the nuts if you aren’t a fan
    • You can use pecans or chopped walnuts you prefer. You can even do a combination of your favorites
    • If your fudge looks grainy, greasy, or separated in the pot, you can fix it by dribbling in heavy cream or evaporated milk and stirring over low heat until the fudge is smooth and unified
    • Fudge is best consumed at room temperature though, so be sure to take it out a few minutes before you want to eat it.
    • Fantasy fudge is a wonderful recipe for gifting.
    • You can use an 8×8-inch pan or a 9×9-inch pan if you want a thicker fudge.

If your fantasy fudge turned out crumbly, it’s most likely because you overcooked it, meaning the sugar mixture reached a temperature that was too high, causing the sugar crystals to become too large and dry, resulting in a crumbly texture; this is the most common reason for crumbly fudge. Too much beating can be the cause of this, the heat being too high, etc. So sorry to hear this! It has happened to me a few times over the years too and although it tastes great still, its frustrating!

Yes. It’s happened to me a few times too. Usually it happens when I’m in a rush and trying to push it along too fast by using a higher temperature. I use a level 6 on my induction range-top and that seems to be perfect. Don’t heat it too fast!!
