Ingredient Notes
See printable recipe card below for exact measurements and full instructions.

- Butter: I use unsalted butter, but salted works too. The butter creates the rich base for this cobbler.
- Chicken: Cooked and shredded chicken breasts work best. Rotisserie chicken is a great shortcut.
- Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix: This gives the cobbler its signature biscuit topping. If needed, Bisquick or my copycat cheddar bay biscuits can be used.
- Milk: Any type of milk works for the biscuit layer.
- Vegetables: Frozen mixed vegetables are convenient, but you can swap in your favorites.
- Chicken Broth: Reduced sodium is recommended so the dish doesn't turn out too salty.
- Cream of Chicken Soup: Forms the creamy base. Store-brand works just fine.
Variations & Substitutions
- Protein swap: Use rotisserie chicken, leftover cooked chicken, or turkey just like in my French onion chicken casserole.
- Add cheese: Sprinkle up to 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, Colby Jack, or mozzarella between the layers.
- Biscuit mix: No Cheddar Bay mix? Bisquick or another biscuit mix works well.
- Veggie swap: Use peas, corn, green beans, or your favorite frozen mix.
- Flavor boost: Brush the biscuit seasoning mixed with melted butter over the top after baking.
How to make Chicken Cobbler Recipe with Cheddar Bay Biscuits

Step 1- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Pour the melted butter into a 9×13 baking dish and spread evenly over the bottom.

Step 2- Sprinkle the shredded chicken and frozen vegetables evenly over the butter. Do not mix.

Step 3- In a bowl, whisk together the biscuit mix and milk until just combined.

Step 4- Pour evenly over the chicken and vegetables. Do not stir. In a small bowl, whisk together the cream of chicken soup and chicken broth.

Step 5- Slowly pour the soup mixture over the biscuit layer. Again, do not mix as this helps create the cobbler texture as it bakes.

Step 6- Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Recipe Tips
- Butter & batter: Melt the butter directly in the pan to save time, and don't worry about a few lumps when mixing the biscuit batter.
- Don't stir the layers: This is key to getting the cobbler texture as everything bakes together as it cooks.
- Bake & rest: Bake until the top is golden and set, then let the cobbler rest 5-10 minutes so it thickens.
- Optional flavor boost: Mix the biscuit seasoning packet with melted butter and brush over the top after baking for extra flavor.

Storage & Reheating
Leftovers from this red lobster casserole reheat perfectly!
- Refrigerate: Let leftovers cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Freezer- Place leftovers in a freezer-safe container and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
- Reheat– Warm individual portions in the microwave in 30-second increments, or reheat covered in the oven until heated through.
Freezer Meal Directions
This chicken cobbler makes an easy freezer-friendly meal. Follow these simple steps and it lasts perfectly in the freezer up to 3 months.
- Assemble the casserole as directed, without baking.
- Wrap the pan tightly with plastic wrap, then foil.
- When ready to bake, thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

What does “one box” mean. What size box?
Kristin Hayes says
Sorry about that, it is the 11.36 ounce box! Enjoy!
Rebecca says
I think the reason some people are saying it’s mushy is because they are following the recipe on the cheddar biscuit box which calls for water and then they are also adding the 2 cups milk from the casserole recipe. Just a thought. Mine turned out amazing, thank you!
Kristin says
I was thinking the same thing as I made this several more times to trouble shoot and had no issues! Glad you enjoyed!!!
Phyllis T. says
I was thinking of making enough to take to a potluck and your recipe generously provides the increased quantities of the ingredients, however, the size of the baking dish and baking time remained the same. Does that mean you used multiple pans?
Kristin says
Hi! Yes, if you want to double, make into two 9×13 pans! Triple would be three 9×13’s, etc. Bake time stays the same! Enjoy!!
Allison Beatty says
Amazing!
Kristin says
Glad you enjoyed!!
G says
The original recipe on TikTok was from a woman who did not use frozen vegetables and she did not use the cheddar Bay biscuit mix. She used either jiffy baking mix or bisquick.
How can I find how much I need to use of the baking mix? Is it one cup or two?
Kristin says
If you’re using Bisquick, you will want to use 2 cups of the baking mix in place of the Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix! Hope you enjoy!
Joanne C says
Brittany,
I made it the first 2 times as written but then tried it the way you asked about. I poured the soup mix over the vegetables then added the biscuit mix which i made like dumplings so I could spoon them on top. So delicious that way!
Love the recipe!!!
Kristin says
Great idea too!! Glad you enjoyed!
Janet says
It was mushy and I did exactly what the recipe said. Good flavor just mushy. Won’t make again.
Bruce and Barb Miller says
I agree that it was too mushy. Way too much liquid. I’ll cut back on the liquid the next time. It was much better as leftovers the next day.
Kristin says
Sorry to hear that! Glad it was still good, but it should have had the consistency of biscuits!
Kristin says
Bummer to hear that! It should have crisped up on top to make a topping similar to a biscuit!
Letha says
Wow!! I just can’t even! It was so awesomely good! My parents couldn’t get over the smell of it cooking and then the first bite it was like heaven!! Perfect recipe for cold winter nights. My mom told me she wants me to make this again. Thanks so much for sharing. I did add garlic & onion powder and pepper put put it on the chicken layer and added some cheddar cheese. It was just way, way too rich & yes , heavenly!
Kristin says
Yay!! Love hearing this! So glad you all enjoyed!!
Brittany says
I’m wondering if the soup mixture should go over the chicken and vegetables and then the biscuits on top? It’s written the other way around but mine is runny and I cooked it way longer than directed and covered with foil. Seemed weird putting the soup on top but I read it multiple times and that’s what it said to do.
Kristin says
Nope, its written in the order needed. I know its a bit confusing, I was confused when my mom first made it, but as it cooks, it comes together perfectly!
Carol K Wray says
Several reviewers said it needed more flavor. In the tips you listed salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. I’m not a great cook and need things spelled out. If I use those spices, how much do I use and are they put in the soup layer?
Kristin says
I would add about 1-2 tsp of desired seasonings such as garlic, onion, etc. If adding salt and pepper, I would start with 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp as you don’t want it to be too salty. You would add the additional seasonings to the bottom soup layer, the one where the chicken is, not the topping. Hope you enjoy!
Devin K Gorka says
I give it a 4 out of 5 stars because thus is the second time making it and the same thing happened it was still runny in the middle how can I fix that? Great taste and love how quick I can prep and cook it up.My family loves it. I hope to share it with others.
Kristin says
If the center isn’t fully cooked, place a piece of aluminum foil on top to allow the center to cook, but the top not to get too browned! Should work perfectly!
Leslee Star says
How much milk? I made the recipe with milk substituting for the 3/4 cup water on the package of Cheddar Bay Biscuits could not pour but still tasted good . I want to make it again after I know how much milk to use. I believe it will rate a 5 star then.
Thanks
Kristin says
It needs 2 cups of milk for this recipe! Hope you try it again and love it!!
Kallie says
I absolutely LOVED this recipe! Definitely a new go to!
Kristin says
Yay! Love hearing this! Glad you enjoyed!
Rob DeRosa says
This was good. I used Bisquick for the dumplings to which I added some rosemary.
Next time I will make more sauce
Kristin says
Glad you enjoyed! Great substitute using the Bisquick, sure comes in handy!!
Danyeil says
I’ll be using bisquick mix. do I use the entire 20 ounce box with the 2 cups of milk?
Kristin says
If using Bisquick mix, you will want to follow the boxed directions for their biscuits. The Red Lobster mix is only a 11 ounce box if I remember right, so you won’t want to use the full 20 ounce. Hope you enjoy!
