Have you tried baked donuts yet? A few years back, I made my Cinnamon Sugar Baked Donuts for the first time and after just one bite, I was hooked. Fluffy, less of a mess, and a healthier alternative to the classic fried method. Since then, I’ve added Coffee Cake Donuts, Apple Cider Donuts, Devil’s Food Chocolate Donuts, and now these crumb cake donuts!

How to make Baked Chocolate Crumb Cake Donuts
Follow these simple step by step directions for the ultimate chocolate crumb cake donut!!
- Grease a donut pan and preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powders, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream, sugar, oil, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients and stir.
- Pour batter (it will be thick) into the prepared donut pan and bake in oven for about 12 minutes (or until cooked through).
- Remove from oven and allow to cool on rack before pouring glaze and crumb topping on top.
- TO MAKE THE GLAZE: Combine the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract together in a small bowl.
- TO MAKE THE CRUMB TOPPING: Melt the butter over low heat in a saucepan. Add in the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Toss together with a fork until crumb like. Press the topping into the glaze while still wet.
Tips for Success
- Don’t overfill the donut pan. Since you are adding the crumb topping and glaze, you only want to fill the pan up about 1/2 way.
- Make sure you use a donut pan if at all possible. If you don’t have one, you can use muffin cups or pipe the donut batter around an aluminum foil ball in a muffin pan, but I highly recommend using a donut pan.
- Feel free to sprinkle mini chocolate chips over the glaze for a tasty addition.
- You can halve this recipe if you only need a few donuts.
Storage Instructions
- These baked donuts are best enjoyed immediately, however, if you have leftovers, store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- To freeze, place in a freezer safe container or bag in the freezer up to 3 months. Allow to thaw and reheat in the microwave until desired temperature is reached.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Baked Donuts taste the same as Fried Donuts?
Not exactly! Baked donuts taste more cake like and have the texture of a quick bread whereas classic donuts that are fried have a crisp outside and fluffy inside. You can’t go wrong with either!
Is a baked donut actually healthier than fried?
Yes! Now, I can’t say these chocolate crumb muffins are HEALTHY, however, they are HEALTHIER than fried. No oil is used, therefore, they have about half the calories and fat!
Can I prepare these ahead of time?
To save on time, feel free to prepare the donut batter ahead of time, up to 24 hours in advance, and store in the refrigerator. When ready to bake, simply remove batter from fridge and pipe into the donut pan cavities!
How can I make these Baked Donuts in a muffin pan?
Make donut muffins in a standard 12-cup muffin pan. Line with cupcake liners or grease with nonstick spray. Fill each 2/3 full with donut batter. Bake at 350°F for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove and add topping/glaze.
