Ingredient Notes
Below is a brief overview of the ingredients needed to make these French Onion Pork Chops. For exact amounts, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post or use the “Jump to Recipe” button at the top.

- Pork Chops: I use boneless pork chops for this recipe, but bone-in pork chops can also be used. Boneless ribeye or loin chops both work well. Choose chops that are similar in thickness so they cook evenly, keeping in mind that thicker chops may need additional time in the oven.
- French Onion Dip: Use your favorite prepared French onion dip. My family likes Lipton, but any refrigerated or prepared brand will work.
- Cheddar Cheese: Shredded cheddar is my go-to and adds plenty of cheesy flavor. You can also use Colby Jack, Monterey Jack, Swiss cheese, or Pepper Jack.
- French Fried Onions: These are the best part! They add lots of onion flavor and give the pork chops that crispy, golden brown topping. French’s is our go-to, but any brand of crispy fried onions works.
Substitutions & Variations
- Sour Cream or Greek Yogurt: In place of prepared French onion dip, use sour cream or plain Greek yogurt mixed with onion soup seasoning. This keeps the creamy texture while still giving the pork chops plenty of onion flavor.
- Change the Cheese: Swap the cheddar cheese for Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, mozzarella, Swiss cheese, or Pepper Jack. Use freshly shredded cheese when possible for the best melt.
- Add Sliced Onions: For even more onion flavor, add thinly sliced yellow or white onions over the pork chops before baking. You can also sauté the sliced onions first for a softer, caramelized texture.
How to Make French Onion Pork Chops in the Oven

Step 1. Add the French onion dip: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Arrange the pork chops in a single layer in a 9×13-inch baking pan, then spread the French onion dip evenly over the top of each pork chop.

Step 2. Add the cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the layer of French onion dip.

Step 3. Top with crispy onions: Sprinkle the French fried onions evenly over the cheese, covering each pork chop.

Step 4. Bake: Bake uncovered for 35-45 minutes, or until the pork chops are cooked through and the onions are golden brown. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature at the thickest part of the chop. Once it reaches at least 145°F, remove from the oven and let the pork chops rest for 3 minutes before serving.
Expert Tips
- Choose evenly sized pork chops: Pork chops that are similar in thickness will cook more evenly. Thin chops may be done sooner, while thicker chops can take closer to the full baking time.
- Don't overcook the pork: Start checking the pork chops toward the lower end of the cooking time. A meat thermometer is the easiest way to prevent dry, overcooked pork.
- Season to taste: French onion dip, cheddar cheese, and French fried onions already add plenty of flavor and salt. If desired, season the pork chops with a little black pepper before adding the dip, but taste before adding extra salt.
- Watch the crispy onions: If the French fried onions are getting too golden brown before the pork chops are done, loosely cover the baking dish with aluminum foil for the remaining cook time.
- Let the pork chops rest: Give them about 3 minutes to rest after removing them from the oven. This helps keep the pork juicy before slicing and serving.
What to Serve with French Onion Pork Chops
These French Onion Pork Chops pair perfectly with potatoes, veggies, or a simple bread on the side. My family loves them with Loaded Mashed Potatoes or Crispy Parmesan Potatoes. Add Lemon Garlic Asparagus or Cheesy Zucchini Bake for a veggie, and you’ve got an easy, complete dinner!
Storage & Reheating
- Refrigerator: Once fully cooled, store leftover French Onion Pork Chops in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Freezer: Freeze leftovers in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Keep in mind, the French fried onions will lose some of their crispy texture once thawed.
- Reheating: Reheat individual pork chops in the microwave in 30-second increments until heated through, or warm them covered in the oven. For the best texture, sprinkle a few fresh French fried onions on top after reheating.
French Onion Pork Chops Recipe FAQs
I haven’t tested this exact recipe in the slow cooker, so I recommend using the oven method for the best results. A slow cooker version would also have a softer topping since the French fried onions won’t stay as crispy.
Yes! Bone-in pork chops work great in this recipe, but they may take longer to cook depending on their thickness. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness and make sure the thickest part of the chop reaches an internal temperature of 145°F before serving.

Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 350°F. Arrange the pork chops in a single layer in a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Notes
- Pork chop thickness will affect cooking time. Begin checking thinner chops around the 35-minute mark.
- Bone-in pork chops can also be used but may need additional baking time.
- If the French fried onions become too golden brown before the pork is done, loosely cover the baking dish with foil.
- For the best results, use a meat thermometer rather than relying on cooking time alone.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

I just saw this recipe for the first time and want to try it. You said in a comment above that you put the chops in frozen? So what would the cooking time be if not frozen?
Thank you!

Hi Lyn, the recipe has been updated since that comment and originally was a crockpot version. I have since converted it to oven, so the current recipe card is updated and accurate. If wanting to make in the crockpot, yes, you can put in frozen and cook on low for about 6 hours. Hope that helps and hope you enjoy!

Sounds great:) Thanks for answering my questions. I couldn’t agree more on not usually knowing what I’m making until that morning, so putting the meat in frozen will be a great help!! Thanks again 🙂

My pleasure!! Feel free to ask as many questions as needed, whenever!! 🙂

I have a couple of questions. First, did you put the chops in frozen? Also, if I needed to do more chops at one time in the slow cooker(like 6-8) can I stack them and will they still get done? I’ve always browned them on the stovetop first, then cook them in the slow cooker with cream of mushroom soup. I can’t wait to try this recipe! Thanks for all your great dinner and dessert ideas. My family and I always come to your website for the wonderful recipes!

Hi!! So glad you enjoy the recipes, we love hearing that!! As for your questions, I always put my meat in frozen bc most of the time, I never know what I am cooking until the actual morning and its frozen haha!! As for stacking them, yes, you would want to stack them, or at least spread them out so they are overlapping. If you are making that many, I would personally use another can of french onion soup to make sure the chops are all covered, 🙂

I just made the chicken with the Frenches canned onions and honey mustard. Terrific, BTW. Wonder if the pork would get too dry in the oven done this way? Maybe I’ll try a pork roast. I made the drop dead chocolate cookies the other day too. What a way to go. Thanks for all your posts. You keep me busy in the kitchen. I just don’t use a crockpot. I’ve had my share of them over the years. I’m retired now and seem to have gotten rid of them. Oh well. I have lots if time to cook now.
