Ingredients Needed to make this Chocolate Covered Oreo Recipe
Below is a brief overview of the ingredients needed. To see printable recipe card, scroll to the bottom of this post.
- Oreo Cookies– you’ll need about 36 Oreo cookies, or one package Oreo cookies. I use double stuffed, but any type works.
- Chocolate– I use milk chocolate and white chocolate, however, any type works. You can use candy melts, almond bark, chocolate chips, chocolate bars, etc. I use Alpino bars of chocolate.
- Sprinkles or Food Coloring– depending on the Holiday or occasion, use colorful sprinkles to fit the day! Chopped nuts also are a great option.
How to make Chocolate Covered Oreos
- Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- Melt the chocolate: you can use the double broiler system or the microwave.
- For the double boiler: Fill a small saucepan with about 1-2 inches of water and bring it to a simmer. Place a heatproof bowl over the saucepan and ensure no water gets inside the bowl. Add the chocolate chips to the bowl. Stir continuously until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
- For the microwave option, place chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl and give it 60-second rounds until it fully melts. You’ll need to stir the chocolate around to ensure it doesn’t burn and it’s evenly melted.
- Using a fork or a chocolate dipping tool, dip each of the Oreo sandwich cookies into the melted chocolate, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow any excess chocolate to drip off before placing the dipped cookie onto the prepared cookie sheet.
- While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle with your choice of decorations (sprinkles, pecans, etc.).
- Allow the chocolate-dipped Oreos to set at room temperature for about 1 hour, or place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes to speed up the process.
- For the Christmas version: add a few drops of red or green food coloring to a few tablespoons of melted white chocolate and drizzle it over the chocolate-covered cookies.
Storing Chocolate Coated Oreos
- Store the cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh and maintain the crispness of the Oreo.
- If stacking the cookies, place a sheet of parchment or wax paper between layers to prevent them from sticking together.
- Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. They should last for about 3-4 weeks at room temp.
- If you prefer a longer storage time or if your environment is warm, store the cookies in the refrigerator.
- Before serving, let the cookies sit at room temperature for a few minutes to avoid condensation, which can make the chocolate sweat.
- To Freeze: Place the cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze initially. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe airtight container or zip-top bag with parchment paper between layers. When ready to eat, thaw them at room temp in their container to prevent moisture from forming on the chocolate.
Chocolate For Dipping Oreos
The great thing about this easy recipe is that you can use so many different chocolate options. I like to use melting wafers, chocolate bars, or even Wilton candy melts. Melts and wafers allow you to not have to temper the chocolate, leaving a smooth finish. If using chocolate chips, add in about 1 teaspoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening to keep the mixture smooth and creamy. Just make sure you use a high-quality chocolate!
Recipe Tips for Chocolate Covered Oreos
- These oreos dipped in chocolate can be covered in sprinkles, pecans, or drizzled with colored chocolates to make them more festive.
- Allow to cool before enjoying. If you need to quicken the process, you can place them in the fridge.
- Use a fork to dip the Oreos as this allows the excess chocolate to drip off. Avoid piercing the cookie with the fork as this will cause it to fall apart. Simply set it on top of the fork, dip into the melted chocolate, and lightly hit the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate.
Oreos Covered in Chocolate FAQ’s
What kind of Oreos can I use in this recipe?
Any variety works! I love using the double stuffed, however, peppermint, regular stuffed, or any flavor works great too!
Can I make these chocolate covered oreos ahead of time?
Absolutely! In fact, that is what I tend to do during the Christmas season to save time. Store at room temperature for up to 4 weeks. Or, freeze them up to 3 months. The outer layer may change once thawed, but you can melt chocolate and drizzle some on top just before serving.
Can I make these into Oreo Pops?
Absolutely! Simply stick a lollipop stick into the center of the white cream. Hold the stick and dip into the melted chocolate. Place on a parchment lined baking tray and allow to harden. You can also top with sprinkles or nuts while chocolate is still wet to make them festive.
