    Angel Food Trifle

Whenever I host a party or have family over, one of my go-to dessert options is a trifle. Not only are they easy to make, but they offer so many variations and serve a crowd. With summer heat here, I love keeping things light and refreshing versus heavy and decadent, which makes this angel food cake dessert the perfect treat to make! Not only does it have the “wow” factor as far as looks go, but it can be changed to use whatever fruit you have on hand. If you’re making it for 4th of July, Labor Day, or Memorial Day, use blueberries and strawberries.

Easy Angel Food Cake Fruit Trifle Ingredient Notes

Using just a few simple ingredients, this fruit trifle dessert comes together quickly and can even be prepared in advance to save on time. For exact ingredient amounts, see printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

    • Angel Food Cake– I use store-bought angel food cake as it saves on time, if you prefer making yours from scratch, that works great too.
    • Milk– any type works, this will be used to make the pudding with the mix.
    • Pudding– I use a 5.1 ounce box of Instant Vanilla Pudding, if you prefer a different flavor, that works too.
    • Cool Whip– you’ll need one 8 ounce container, homemade whipped topping works too using heavy whipping cream.
    • Almond Extract– this gets added into the pudding for more flavor, feel free to omit or use vanilla extract if you don’t have almond on hand.
    • Strawberries– freshly trimmed and sliced.
    • Kiwi– peel and slice.

all the ingredients needed to make an angel food cake fruit trifle.

How to make Angel Food Cake Berry Trifle

    1. Break the angel food cake into small pieces.
    2. Whisk instant pudding mix with the two cups milk as directed on package until thickened.
    3. Mix in almond extract, stirring to combine.
    4. Place pudding into refrigerator to set up, for about 10-20 minutes..
    5. Fold pudding and cool whip together until combined.
    6. In a trifle dish or large glass bowl, layer half the strawberries and kiwi’s rows up against side of glass in a pretty pattern.
    7. In middle of dish, layer cake pieces, pudding mixture, and remaining fruit in 2 layers, ending with the fruit.
    8. Serve or keep chilled in refrigerator until ready to enjoy!

    Variations

    • Feel free to change up the flavor of pudding to whichever is preferred. I have used lemon, pistachio, and chocolate in place of the vanilla pudding.
    • Change up the fruit based on what you have on hand or is in season. You can use fresh berries such as raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, etc.  to make a berry trifle. Or, use bananas, melons, grapes, and more.
    • If you don’t want to use angel food cake, use pound cake. Both are great options. Pound cake is a bit more dense and not as light and fluffy, but both have great flavor.
    • Sprinkle some powdered sugar on top just before serving for an added sweetness. It will sink into the fruit, leaving just the sweetness behind.

    Storing this Fruit Trifle Recipe

    • You can make this trifle up to 24 hours in advance. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and store in refrigerator until ready to serve.
    • If you have leftovers, simply cover and store in fridge for up to 4 days. It may get a bit more liquidy, but will still taste great.
    • Don’t keep this out at room temperature for any longer than about 2 hours as the layers start blending into one another and will lose the “wow” factor.
    • Due to the cool whip and pudding, it is not recommended to freeze leftovers for a later date.

Absolutely! In fact, its actually a bit better making it earlier because the cake gets moist from the pudding and is quite tasty! Enjoy!
