Death by Chocolate Muffins Ingredients Needed

See printable recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts and step by step directions.

    • Butter– I use room temperature unsalted butter in this recipe since salt is added
    • White/Brown Sugar– you’ll use both white and brown sugar to give these muffins their perfect sweetness
    • Vanilla Extract– make sure you are using pure versus imitation
    • Eggs– large eggs at room temperature
    • Salt/ Baking Powder/ Baking Soda– ensure freshness by changing your baking soda/powder every 6 months
    • Cocoa Powder– Hershey unsweetened cocoa powder gives these muffins their chocolate base, you can also use Dutch-processed cocoa
    • Flour– you’ll want to use all-purpose flour
    • Sour Cream– this gives the muffins their moistness throughout
    • Chocolate Chips– any type works, I use semi-sweet chocolate chips typically although milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips are great too, chocolate chunks work too

all the ingredients needed to make a chocolate pastry treat.

How to make Double Chocolate Chip Muffins

    1. Preheat oven to 350 F and grease or line a muffin tray with paper liners.
    2. In a large bowl, combine the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar. Beat with a mixer until smooth.
    3. Add in the vanilla, eggs, salt, baking soda, and baking powder. Stir until just combined.
    4. Add in the cocoa powder and mix until combined.
    5. Add in the flour and sour cream, mixing until just combined.
    6. Fold in the chocolate chips, leave a few out for the top of the muffins.
    7. Pour batter about ¾ full into prepared muffin tins. *For ease, use an ice cream scoop for consistency.
    8. Sprinkle a few extra chocolate chips on top and stick muffin tray in oven.
    9. Bake for 17-20 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean when inserted in center of muffin.
    10. Remove from oven and allow to cool 3-5 minutes before removing from tray and enjoying!

step by step on how to make double chocolate muffins.

    Tips for Success

    • Avoid over-mixing the batter as this will cause the muffins to come out dense, dry, and tough. Instead, by stirring until just combined, the end result will be a moist, fluffy, chocolate muffin that will have you going back for seconds.
    • Use room temperature ingredients! This helps everything to combine together easier and therefore less mixing.
    • Allow the muffins to cool for a few minutes before removing from the muffin pan as you don’t want them to fall apart and with all the chocolate being melty from the heat, they need about 3-5 minutes to finish setting up.

How to store Death by Chocolate Muffins

    • Once fully cooled, place muffins into an airtight storage container or bag at room temperature up to 4 days.
    • You can also store these in the fridge for up to 6 days.
    • To freeze, place in a freezer safe container or bag for up to 3 months. Allow to thaw and reheat in microwave using 30 second increments until heated through.

    Serving Suggestions

    • As I mentioned above, I really enjoy these for an indulgent breakfast treat with my morning coffee. I am weird and don’t prefer my muffins warm. I love when the chocolate chips harden a bit, and I can taste them throughout. If you prefer melted, ooey gooey, simply enjoy fresh from oven or reheat in microwave.
    • You can also enjoy on the go as a snack with a cold glass of milk.
    • These muffins make a fabulous dessert option too! Serve with a scoop of ice cream on top to make it similar to enjoying chocolate cupcakes!
    • If you want to serve these as a dessert option, you can also cover with chocolate frosting or chocolate ganache. Either use a rubber spatula or piping bag to keep things easy. A buttercream frosting adds a tasty addition to these as well.
