    Alabama White Sauce

Have you heard of Alabama White BBQ Sauce? If you live in the South or have visited, chances are you know BBQ. Each Southern state has their own take on BBQ from Texas loving their brisket, Kentucky loving their chipped mutton, and Alabama loving this white BBQ sauce.

This mayonnaise-based BBQ sauce was invented in 1925 by Robert ‘Big Bob’ Gibson at Big Bob Gibson’s Bar-B-Q restaurant, in Decatur. It can be enjoyed as a marinade, basting sauce, and/or dipping sauce. The restaurant original recipe was measured in gallons and is a fairly simple mixture of mayonnaise, corn syrup, vinegar, and salt/pepper.

You may be thinking that a mayonnaise-based BBQ sauce doesn’t sound the best but let me tell you…it’s a must try! My family loves to enjoy this sauce over shredded chicken in a sandwich, but we also love dipping our fries in it as well! Kick your burgers up a notch with this sauce!

What is Alabama White BBQ Sauce made of?

This sauce starts with a mayo base that is thinned out with a little vinegar, then gets a flavor kick from mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and other spices.

So incredibly easy to make. You simply whisk everything together in a bowl until smooth, pour into a jar or container, and refrigerate until ready to use it. It’s so simple, but oh so yummy.

Ingredients Needed for White BBQ Sauce

To make your own creamy version of Alabama's favorite white barbecue sauce, you need the following ingredients:

    • Mayonnaise- I use Duke’s, but use whichever brand you prefer
    • Apple Cider Vinegar- adds great tang to this sauce
    • Worcestershire Sauce- don’t skip this as it adds incredible flavor
    • Dijon Mustard– extra flavor and tang
    • Salt/Pepper– to taste
    • Onion Powder
    • Garlic Powder
    • Cayenne Pepper– optional, for an added kick

How to make Zesty Alabama White BBQ Sauce

    1. Add- all ingredients to a medium bowl
    2. Whisk- until all is combined
    3. Store- in refrigerator until ready to use

    Variations to try

With just a few small tweaks, you can make this sauce fit your tastes as desired

    • Lighter- feel free to use ½ sour cream in place of some of the mayonnaise.
    • Seasoning- add in 1 teaspoon of your favorite dry rub or Cajun seasoning for an added kick
    • Heat- feel free to add in some diced jalapenos, peppers, or a splash of hot sauce

Serving Suggestions for White BBQ Sauce

While the sauce is famous for serving on or with smoked/grilled chicken, it also is a great addition to any grilled food, BBQ foods, and more!

    • Smoked Crispy Chicken
    • Grilled Meats
    • Fish
    • Vegetables
    • Dip for air fryer frozen fries and crispy air fried onion rings
    • Smoked Chicken Wings
    • Salad Dressing

    How to Store

You can store this sauce in the refrigerator for up to five days. After that, you should make a fresh batch. Store in an airtight container. Do not freeze this as it does not thaw well as will clump. Make when needed and use within a few days for best results and flavor.

What to serve this BBQ sauce with:

BEST EVER Juicy Burgers– Simple to make, packed with flavor, and can be made to fit anyone's desires!!

Air Fryer Frozen French Fries– the easiest fries you'll ever make! These fries are super crispy and ready in under 15 minutes, you'll never cook them any other way!

Smoked Crispy Chicken– tastes like fried chicken, without actually needing to fry anything at all! Flavorful and a family favorite, dip it in your favorite sauce or enjoy it on its own!

Tasty Smoked Pork Carnitas– rich, melt in your mouth pork…..perfect for tacos or on its own
