Why are they called Funeral Sandwiches?

These Ham and Swiss Sliders are delicious and simple to prepare. Originating from a cherished Southern tradition dating back to the 1700s, these sliders were commonly served alongside drinks and other food at funerals. This versatile recipe is crowd-pleasing, perfect for making in advance, and easily scalable to accommodate any number of guests!

    Ingredients Needed for Funeral Sandwiches

See printable recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts and step by step instructions.

    • Mini Slider Buns- you can use any slider buns desired, however, I highly recommend using Hawaiian rolls for this recipe. Soft, sweet, and fluffy!
    • Ham- any flavor you desire, thinly sliced. I go to the deli and have them shave it.
    • Swiss Cheese- this adds the most flavor, however, feel free to substitute with Provolone, mozzarella, etc.
    • Butter- melted, I use unsalted as the other ingredients add the flavor once combined.
    • Mustard- I use and LOVE Dijon mustard on these sliders. You can also use honey mustard if desired.
    • Worcestershire Sauce- a little goes a long way and adds the perfect boost of flavor.
    • Onion- optional, but highly recommended. I use dried minced onion.
    • Poppyseeds- optional, adds a great color to the top of these sliders, and slight crunch.

step by step on how to make ham and swiss sliders

    How to make Funeral Sandwiches

    1. Slice Hawaiian Rolls in half lengthwise.
    2. Combine melted butter, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, onion, and poppyseeds in a small bowl.
    3. Layer ham and cheese slices on the bottom halves of the rolls.
    4. Place top of rolls onto the ham/cheese to create sandwiches.
    5. Brush butter mixture evenly on top of the rolls.
    6. Place tray or pan into preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes.
    7. Remove from oven and serve!

How to make Funeral Sandwiches Ahead of Time

Up to one day before you are ready to bake the sandwiches, prepare are directed until you are ready to brush the mustard sauce on top of the rolls. Instead, cover the sandwiches with plastic and place in the refrigerator. When you are ready to bake, simply remove sandwiches from the refrigerator, prepare sauce according to directions, brush on top of the rolls, and place in oven to bake.

    Funeral Slider Tips

    • A serrated knife works best to evenly slice the slider rolls/Hawaiian rolls in half.
    • Feel free to use any cheese desired if you aren’t a fan of Swiss.
    • This is the perfect recipe to make with leftover Ham from Thanksgiving or Christmas.
    • You can use yellow mustard or honey mustard in place of the Dijon.
    • If your sliders start turning too brown while baking, cover with aluminum foil.
    • Use sesame seeds in place of the poppyseeds.

    Storing Leftover Sandwiches

Refrigerator: cover pan with aluminum foil and place in refrigerator up to 3 days. You can enjoy them chilled or warm them up in the microwave/air fryer.

Freezer: wrap the leftover sandwiches in plastic wrap and place in a freezer safe container or bag. Place sandwiches in the freezer for up to 2 months.

What to serve with Funeral Sandwiches

Smoked Deviled Eggs– a show-stopping twist on an old classic. Hard smoked eggs serve as the base for a tangy and slightly spicy filling.

ULTIMATE Potato Salad– a classic potato salad that includes hard boiled eggs, crunchy celery, onion, and more tossed in a creamy, tangy dressing!

BEST EVER Mac and Cheese– outrageously cheesy, incredibly creamy, and topped with a crunchy breadcrumb topping, this mac and cheese recipe is definitely a keeper.

Easy BBQ Baked Beans– easily made with pantry items, these BBQ baked beans come together quickly and need just a couple of hours in the oven.

Lets change that name. Funeral sandwiches. Funeral on any food sounds gross. Funeral potatoes the same. As far as the sandwich Baked Ham would be proper. Just saying!

This is actually a recipe that has been passed down to me and was originally called Funeral Sandwiches, so I didn’t want to change the name. It is also referred to as Baked Ham and Cheese Sandwiches, so it can be referred to as several different options. Hope you enjoy.
