I don’t know about you, but I love classic muddy buddies, also known as puppy chow. The chocolate peanut butter combination that comes together with just a few simple ingredients can’t be beat. From my Patriotic Puppy Chow to my Christmas Muddy Buddies and now this Smore Muddy Buddies recipe, you can’t go wrong!

What are Muddy Buddies aka Puppy Chow?

Puppy chow, also known as monkey munch, muddy buddies, muddy munch, reindeer chow, or doggy bag, is the name for a homemade candy made in the United States. It typically consists of Chex cereal, melted chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. It’s a fun and easy to make salty sweet treat that people of all ages enjoy.

This s’ mores muddy buddies variation is made even better by adding in a few extra ingredients that take the nostalgia of the classic campfire treat and turn it into a snack that can be enjoyed year round.

    Smores Puppy Chow Ingredients Notes

Using a few simple ingredients, you have a perfect snack ready to enjoy any time that sweet tooth craving hits! For exact recipe ingredient amounts, see printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

    • Cereal– for this recipe, I actually used Krave Chocolate Filled Cereal in place of Corn chex or rice Chex cereal, however, either works great depending on what you have on hand or find on sale at your grocery store.
    • Chocolate Chips– you’ll need a full bag as some get melted and the rest get added into the snack mix later. I use semi sweet chocolate chips, but milk chocolate works great too.
    • Nutella– this adds a tasty hazelnut addition. If preferred, you can use creamy peanut butter in place of the nutella.
    • Graham Crackers– any brand works, you’ll want to pulse these in a food processor to get crumbs.
    • Powdered Sugar– this coats the cereal and adds the sweetness to the chex mix.
    • Teddy Graham’s– any type works, I use honey Teddy Graham’s. These add the additional graham cracker addition to the snack mix.
    • Marshmallows– mini marshmallows or dehydrated marshmallows are best for this recipe.
    • Hershey Bars– optional, but highly recommended. You’ll add the mini pieces of chocolate bar to the finished muddy buddy just before serving.
all the ingredients needed to make S'mores Muddy Buddies.

How to make S’mores Muddy Buddies

This easy, NO- BAKE recipe comes together with just a few simple steps! Make it a day or two ahead of when needed and enjoy a quick, easy dessert option!

    1. Place cereal into a large mixing bowl.
    2. Add your one cup of chocolate chips and Nutella, to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for two minutes, stirring halfway through, until everything is melted and smooth.
    3. Pour over cereal and fold cereal into chocolate until well combined and everything is coated evenly.
    4. Add your graham cracker crumbs and powdered sugar to a zip-lock bag.
    5. Pour in your chocolate covered cereal. Seal the bag and shake well, until all the cereal is coated in crumbs and powdered sugar.
    6. Pour out onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place in the freezer until your chocolate is set.
    7. In a large serving dish, add your prepared muddy buddies, teddy grahams, marshmallows, and chocolate chips. Stir until well combined.
    8. Top with Hershey bar squares, if you desire. Serve and enjoy. This will be a campfire snack favorite.

    Variations

    • Peanut Butter– in place of the nutella for a tasty chocolate peanut butter combination.
    • Golden Graham Cereal– in place of the Teddy Grahams, these make a great graham cracker alternative
    • Milk Chocolate Chips– in place of the semi-sweet, use whichever you prefer.

How to store S’mores Muddy Buddies

    • Store in an airtight storage container on the counter at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. If the temperature is warm outside, I recommend storing in the fridge to prevent the chocolate from melting and getting messy.
    • To freeze, store in a freezer safe container up to 2 months. I love to prepare this in advance and store in the freezer. For gifts, I scoop some out into gift bags and give to friends, neighbors, teachers, etc.
