Simple Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

May 6, 2019 by Kristin 14 Comments

The fastest, easiest way to hard boil eggs in the Instant Pot using the 5-5-5 method! Quick, simple, and easy to peel….you’ll never go back to your old ways!

These Simple Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs were one of the first things I made in my Instant Pot! Honestly, I can’t believe I haven’t shared the method with you all sooner, but better late than never, right?!

Hard boiled eggs have always been one of those things I made on a rare occasion. I used the stove top method for years and no matter what I tried, the shells were a pain to peel. I watched YouTube videos on adding baking soda, adding vinegar, you name it, I tried it! Nonetheless, I made them only when I had a major craving for egg salad or needed them in my potato salad!

Once I joined the Instant Pot Facebook group, I began scrolling through the posts for ideas, tips, and inspiration! I began to notice that SEVERAL people talked about how simple hard boiling eggs were and some people were even doing dozens at a time! Immediately intrigued, I decided to try the 5-5-5 method.

I made 6 hard boiled eggs the first time. I figured, if they didn’t turn out, at least I wasn’t out much and the effort was minimal.

Placing the eggs on the trivet and setting the Instant Pot up was a breeze. Once the timer went off, I waited the additional 5 minutes before doing a quick release. I tossed the eggs in an ice bath for an additional 5 minutes and that was it. My hubby and I peeled them incredibly quickly (life changing in fact, haha), and prepared egg salad for lunch!

Next time, I plan on doing many more eggs because 6 was not enough! Nothing tastier than a hard boiled egg in the morning, egg salad for lunch, chopped up in a salad, etc.

If you don’t have an Instant Pot, I recommend trying this using a friends. I’m telling you, this method alone may encourage you to run out and buy yourself an Instant Pot!

In 15 minutes, you can have as many hard boiled eggs as you need, all that peel incredibly easy, and are cooked to perfection! Also check out the egg rack link below, I just got one and love mine!

Enjoy and be sure to let me know what you think if you try it!

I read a lot of these hard boiled egg posts. The things that consistently seem to be missing.

    1. What size instant pot?
    2. What size eggs?
    3. Room temperature or right out of the fridge?

    Thanks

Oooo, good feedback! I will go add that into the recipe! I use a 6 quart Instant Pot, large eggs, and right out of the fridge!

On the stove, if you boil your water first then put any size eggs in , boil for 10 min. ,(For hard boil) then empty water and put cold water in, wait a few minutes and shells come off easy.

If you boil eggs for 10 mins there will be a gray coating on the yolks. Not pretty and effects their taste

I have an 8 quart Instant Pot. Would everything remain the same or would there be any changes?

Nope, no changes needed for an 8qt vs the 6qt. Keep everything as written and it’ll turn out great!! Hope you enjoy!!

Tried for the first time today. The yolks were set but softer and more yellow than boiling on stove. Did not look like picture posted. And they were hard to peel. Were they not cool enough? I followed directions… 5-5-5. Thank you

They peel easily when completely cooled. Some people, depending on altitude, change to a 4-4-4 method and have better results. Are you at a low/high elevation? Make sure the eggs are completely chilled next time you try!

if I want to do 18 eggs – do I increase the amount of water/time to cook? And if so, by how much?

For that amount, I would recommend doing 2 batches of 9. Same water and time as listed in the directions, but that way the eggs won’t be touching as much and needing to lay on each other. Enjoy!
