Patriotic Oreo Truffles Recipe Ingredient Notes
See printable recipe card at the bottom of this post for exact ingredient amounts and step by step directions.
- Oreo’s– you will need about 36 Oreo cookies. I use original, however, any other flavors work great too.
- Cream Cheese– let the cream cheese soften so it combines into the Oreo crumbs easily.
- Candy Melts– you will need both red candy melts and blue candy melts.
- Almond Bark– I use vanilla almond bark, however, you can also use white chocolate chips if desired.
- Sprinkles– have fun with this by using red, white, and blue or stars.
How to make Red White and Blue Oreo Balls
- Add half the Oreo cookies to a food processor and blend on medium speed until cookie crumbs. Add in remaining Oreo cookies and blend once more until crumb mixture forms. Blending them in sections allows an even crumble to form versus having large pieces and fine crumbs.
- Add in the softened cream cheese, mixing until combined.
- Roll the Oreo cream cheese mixture into 1-2 inch balls and place onto a baking sheet covered with wax paper or parchment paper.
- Once the mixture is rolled into balls, place rimmed baking trays into refrigerator to chill for an hour. *Sometimes the balls will settle and need to be rolled again after chilled to form the perfect circular shape.
- Once chilled, heat the blue candy melts in a microwave safe bowl in the microwave in 30 second increments. Stir until smooth and creamy.
- Drop the melted blue candy over half of the Oreo balls, letting the excess drip off. Place them back onto the wax paper. For the best results, place each ball onto a fork and let the candy fall over.
- Top every other blue Oreo truffle with sprinkles, quickly before the candy sets. (We’ll drizzle the others with more candy.)
- For the remaining Oreo balls, melt the red candy melts in the microwave by heating on 30 second increments, stirring well in between.
Add sprinkles to every other red Oreo ball. - For the white drizzle, melt the almond bark in the microwave, by heating on 30 second increments. Pour the melted almond bark into a plastic sandwich storage bag or small piping bag. Then, snip off a tiny spot from one corner. Drizzle the blank Oreo cookie balls with the white candy, and quickly add sprinkles.
- Allow the Oreo truffles to set for 30 minutes, and enjoy.
Tips for the best 4th of July Truffles
- Avoid using double stuffed Oreo’s in this recipe as it adds in too much filling and results in the truffles not setting up properly.
- Use full fat cream cheese as it offers the richest flavor. Low fat cream cheese is thicker and doesn’t add as much creaminess.
- The key to success when dipping these is to use a fork or toothpick. This allows the chocolate to drip off and make less of a mess.
- If you don’t have a food processor, put the Oreo’s in a plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin or the bottom of a heavy glass.
- Use different color candy melts and sprinkle variations to make these for any occasion, holiday, or party!
- Use a cookie scoop to help make the Oreo balls uniform. Plus, the scoop makes it so easy to make a bunch quickly. While you can certainly use a spoon, the cookie scoop makes it so much easier and faster.
How to store Oreo Cream Cheese Balls
- For best results, make sure to put the Oreo balls in the fridge. Just put them inside an airtight container. Don’t leave them on the counter for longer than 2 hours because the chocolate will start to melt and the truffles will soften.Store red white and blue truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 1 week or in the freezer up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
