Ingredient Notes for 4th of July Rice Krispie Treats
See printable recipe card at the bottom of this post for exact ingredient amounts and step by step directions.
- Butter– I prefer unsalted butter in this recipe, however, if you only have salted butter, that works too. Margarine works if it is what you have on hand.
- Marshmallows– use the mini marshmallows for this recipe if you can. You can use regular marshmallows too, just make sure it is exactly 15 ounces.
- Rice Krispies Cereal– regular or generic brand of crispy rice cereal does not matter, buy whichever is on sale.
- Frosting– I use white frosting as it adds to the red, white, and blue theme, cream cheese frosting works great too.
- Food Coloring– you will only need a few drops of blue and red coloring.
- Sprinkles– have fun with these and use red sprinkles, white sprinkles, blue sprinkles, or even star sprinkles. You can also use red, white, and blue M&M’s or white chocolate chips.
How to make Fourth of July Rice Krispie Treats
- Divide half the marshmallows and half the butter into two large microwave-safe bowls.
- Microwave the first for about 1-2 minutes, or until the marshmallows and butter are melted. Stir to combine. Repeat with the other.
- Add red food coloring to the first bowl until desired color of red is reached. Repeat with blue coloring on next bowl.
- Add half the rice krispy cereal to the red melted marshmallow mixture, and the other half of the cereal to the blue mixture stirring to fully combine.
- Grease two 9×13 baking pans with cooking spray. Add the red rice krispie mixture to one prepared dish and the blue rice krispie cereal mixture to the second prepared dish.
- Spray some nonstick cooking spray onto your hands and press cereal down until cereal fully coats the dish in an even layer. Repeat until both pans are filled.
- Add the festive sprinkles on top of each pan and allow to fully set up for about 40 minutes.
- Once set up, use a 3 inch star shaped cookie cutter and cut out as many stars as you can from the red and blue pans.
- Spread the white frosting on top of the blue star shapes and press a red star shape on top to form a sandwich. Continue until all the stars are combined into sandwiches. Serve!
Tips and Variations
- If you don’t have cookie cutter shapes available, simply cut the fourth of July rice krispies into squares using a sharp knife to create festive squares. They will still be red, white, and blue, just not star shaped!
- If you prefer to melt the butter and marshmallows over the stove, that works too, just use medium low heat as to avoid burning.
- To make the star shapes thicker, you can use two 8×8 baking pans. You won’t get as many cut out stars, but they’ll be thicker.
- When assembling the star sandwiches, make sure you place the sprinkled sides opposite each other so both sides are sprinkled once assembled.
- Using a smaller star cut out will result in being able to make more star sandwiches, so if you are making these for a crowd, use a small cookie cutter.
- For the best rice crispy treats, use fresh marshmallows and cereal.
- The colored layers can be changed for any holiday or occasion. Make these for Christmas (red & green), St. Patrick’s Day (green), Valentine’s Day (red & pink), etc.
