Apple Spice Bake

August 11, 2013 by Kristin Leave a Comment

Yesterday, we celebrated my dad’s birthday. Each year, the tradition in my family is that the birthday person gets to choose their dinner and dessert. This year, I was in charge of dessert, and since my dad LOVES fruit type desserts, I decided to bake an apple bake. It is quite similar to cobbler, however, its not as “bread like” on the top layer. This reminded us all of Fall and had such a yummy spice taste to it. This would be especially yummy when apples are in season and you can go pick your own apples!!

Ingredients:

2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cloves
3 tbsp whole wheat pastry flour (all purpose works too)
1/2 tsp salt
9 apples
4 tbsp butter

Topping:

1 cup whole wheat pastry flour (all purpose works too)
1/2 cup whole oats
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
4 tbsp butter
2 eggs
1/3 cup milk

Directions:

In a small bowl, mix together the sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, flour, and salt. Set aside. Rinse, peel, and chop apples into desired size. Place cut up apples in the bottom of a 9×13 baking pan. Sprinkle sugar mixture on top of apples and toss to coat thoroughly. Cut up 4 tbsp butter into small pieces and place on top of sugar coated apples. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, oats, sugar, baking powder, salt, butter, eggs, and milk. Pour mixture on top of apples and spread to coat evenly. Bake in a preheated oven, 375, for about 35-40 minutes. Serve warm in a bowl with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and scoop of whipped topping!!
