Ingredient Notes
See printable recipe card below for full ingredients and directions.

- Watermelon: Use ripe, seedless watermelon for the best flavor and natural sweetness. Blend the watermelon until smooth to create fresh watermelon juice. For an even smoother drink, strain the pureed watermelon before mixing.
- Tequila: While I prefer blanco tequila (or silver tequila) for its clean flavor, añejo tequila can be used for a richer, slightly oaky flavor.
- Triple Sec: This orange liqueur adds sweetness and helps balance the tartness of the lime juice. Cointreau can also be used in place of triple sec.
- Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice gives this watermelon margarita recipe the brightest flavor. Bottled lime juice works in a pinch, but fresh is best.
- Salt: Use coarse margarita salt or Tajín to create a flavorful salt rim on your margarita glass.
Variations
- Spicy Watermelon Margarita: Add a few slices of fresh jalapeño to the blender or cocktail shaker for a sweet and spicy twist. For even more heat, use Tajín on the rim of the glass.
- Virgin Watermelon Margarita: Skip the alcohol and replace the tequila and triple sec with sparkling water or lemon-lime soda for a mocktail version. You can also add a drizzle of honey for extra sweetness if desired.
- Watermelon Mint Margarita: Add a few fresh mint leaves for a cool, refreshing twist that’s perfect on a hot summer day.
How to Make a Watermelon Margarita

Step 1. Add the watermelon chunks and ice cubes to a blender.

Step 2. Add the tequila to the blender.

Step 3. Add the triple sec to the blender.

Step 4. Squeeze in the fresh lime juice.

Step 5. Blend until smooth and well combined.

Step 6. Pour the watermelon margarita into your prepared glass. Garnish with fresh lime or watermelon wedges and enjoy!
How to Salt the Rim
For a classic margarita finish, run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass and dip it into margarita salt. Don’t toss the lime rinds, they can be used as a garnish alongside fresh watermelon wedges.

Fresh Watermelon Margarita Recipe FAQs
Blanco tequila, sometimes called silver tequila, is my favorite choice for watermelon margaritas. Its clean, crisp flavor pairs perfectly with the fresh watermelon and lime.
Yes! You can prepare the watermelon juice up to 2 days ahead and store it in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, simply mix with the remaining ingredients and enjoy.
Absolutely! Frozen watermelon creates a thicker, slushier texture and is perfect for making a frozen watermelon margarita.
Not usually. If your watermelon is ripe and naturally sweet, there’s no need for additional sweetener. If you’d like a sweeter cocktail, add a little agave or simple syrup to taste.
