I don’t know about you but it can be kind of gross opening a can of refried beans, plopping the beans into a pan and it staying in the form of the can. I decided, I wanted to try making my own since I had heard it was easy, I could control what went into it, and no more looking at beans in the shape of a can, hehe! Although these did need to simmer for a long time, it was quite simple and the taste was amazing! I definitely recommend at least trying it once. One batch made about 4 cans worth, so it definitely saves some money as well!!
Ingredients:
1 lb bag dry pinto beans
2 quarts water
1/4 cup water
1/2 cup milk
Salt
1/2 cup salsa
Directions:
Wash the pinto beans and toss any stones or bad beans. Add beans, 2 quarts of water, and a generous sprinkle of salt to a large pot. Bring to a boil. Once boiling, cover with lid and reduce heat to a simmer. Allow to simmer for 2-3 hours. You will know the beans are ready when they are soft and starting to break apart. Drain all water and place back into pot. Add in 1/4 cup water and begin mashing the beans with a potato masher. Add in some more salt. Slowly add in the milk and mix until creamy and combined. Serve!! These are perfect on our Quick and Easy Tostadas!!
