This tasty Black Eyed Susan Cocktail is the official drink of the Preakness and combines pineapple, orange, and lime into one refreshing drink that is the ultimate summer beverage!

pineapple, orange, and lime juices combined into an adult beverage served at the preakness

Last night, my parents had some friends over for drinks and dinner. My dad loves playing bartender anytime he can, so he decided to whip up this new cocktail for everyone to enjoy. One sip in, everyone declared it a hit! The citrus combination made this a refreshing drink to enjoy on the hot summer evening.

Where does this cocktail get its name from?

This cocktails name comes from the flowers used to make the blanket that drapes over the winning horse at the Preakness in Baltimore, Maryland. A citrus type of cocktail made using pineapple juice, orange juice, vodka, rum, and orange liqueur…. it’s a winner with everyone! A Black-Eye Susan Cocktail is to the Preakness Stakes as a mint julep is to the Kentucky Derby. In fact, every 3rd Saturday in May for the past 46 years, people can’t wait to order/gulp one down!

When was the Black Eye Susan Cocktail created?

According to Retro Baltimore, the official cocktail of the Preakness, the black-eyed Susan, was introduced in 1973. Since then, the cocktail's official recipe has changed, several times, and often depending on what liquor sponsors have been lined up for the annual race.

That 1973 mix, we know, was a base of rum and vodka, splashed with orange and pineapple juices. But details about the origin of the cocktail can be confusing. Cocktail lore often is.
