A few days ago, my aunt emailed me to tell me about a recipe she made for dinner. She ended up sending me some pictures too so I could blog it. This recipe was made by my great grandma as well as my grandma. It is a Belgium recipe. In Belgium, this is considered a meat-loaf patty, whereas in other areas, it is considered a sausage. Although I have never made it, seeing the pictures and hearing how my grandma and great grandma made this, I think I may just need to add it to my meal plan!

When researching Frikadel, you might see it spelled as a ‘frikkadel recipe‘. It’s generally the same thing! Traditionally, good frikkadel is a South African meatball where you sauté onions and use extra seasonings and ball it up with beef. Then you fry the meat mixture in a large frying pan. South Africans have been eating frikkadel for a long time!

Frikadel, also goes by the name ‘frikadelle’ and is also known as a national dish in Denmark too! However, their version is generally boiled. These Danish meatballs gained popularity in the 17th and 18th century—and it’s now a popular dish in many European countries (like Belgium as I mentioned above)! Fun and interesting history, right?!

Frikadel a great recipe if you love meat patties with a ton of flavor! Looking to make it a meal? There are plenty of perfect side dishes to pair with it too! See my suggestions below!
