a creamy White Russian cocktail in an old fashioned glass with ice.

Years ago, my husband and I started experimenting with cocktails at home as a fun weekend date night tradition. We've tried it all, from Frozen Chocolate Mudslides to unique martinis like Lemon Drop Martini’s and even a Peanut Butter Cup Martini. That includes a delicious twist on this White Russian recipe: Salted Caramel White Russians. Even though we don’t drink as often these days, the classic White Russian Cocktail remains a favorite in our home.

    Ingredient Notes

See printable recipe card below for exact measurements and instructions.

all the ingredients needed to make a classic White Russian cocktail.
    • Vodka– I love using Tito's vodka for the classic White Russian, but you can experiment with gin, bourbon, or dark rum for a unique twist.
    • Kahlua Coffee Liqueur– Kahlua is traditional for this white russian, offering a smooth and rich coffee flavor. Tia Maria works well too.
    • Bailey’s Irish Cream– Optional, but adds extra sweetness and creamy texture.
    • Ice– Essential for keeping your cocktail chilled and refreshing.

Tip: Using high-quality ingredients makes a noticeable difference in this creamy coffee liqueur cocktail.

    Substitutions and Variations

    • Dairy Options: Use heavy cream, half-and-half, milk, or non-dairy alternatives like almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, or coconut milk.
    • Black Russian: Skip the cream for a simple vodka and coffee liqueur version.
    • Seasonal Flavors: Change things up with peppermint, gingerbread, or caramel for the holidays. You can also check out my Peppermint White Russian, Gingerbread White Russian, and Salted Caramel White Russian for more festive ideas.
    • Mixing Style: Use a cocktail shaker for a frothy drink or stir over ice for the classic layered look.
    • Glassware: Old-fashioned or rocks glasses both work perfectly.

    • Prefer a fully blended drink? Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker for a frothy easy White Russian.
    • To lighten it up, substitute whole milk or non-dairy cream, or skip the cream entirely for a classic Black Russian.
    • Serve in old-fashioned or rocks glasses for the perfect presentation.

    White Russian Drink Recipe FAQs

Where did the White Russian cocktail originate?

The White Russian first appeared in the 1950s but gained iconic status after the 1990s cult classic movie The Big Lebowski. The "Dude" made this creamy, coffee-flavored cocktail a household favorite since it was the main character’s drink of choice.

What are the classic ingredients in a White Russian?

Three main components: vodka, coffee liqueur (like Kahlua), and cream or milk. Serve over ice in an old-fashioned glass.

Can I make White Russian cocktails ahead of time?

Yes! Mix vodka and coffee liqueur ahead, but add cream and ice just before serving to keep that creamy texture perfect.

By “part” do you mean “SHOT”

One part is an inexact measurement. It can mean, for example, 1 ounce, 1 tablespoon or 1 cup. The key is keeping all “parts” equal.
