There is nothing better than waking up and enjoying biscuits and gravy, am I right?!?! Or, enjoying it as a hearty lunch and dinner option! It’s the kind of food that is good anytime because its comfort food at its finest!
Typically, I make mine in a cast iron skillet over the stove, but last week, I decided to once again, go the Instant Pot route. For those of you that don’t have an Instant Pot, click here, https://thecookinchicks.com/biscuits-and-gravy-skillet/ for the stovetop version!
Taking only about 5 minutes to prepare and a 2 minute cook time, this sausage gravy came out incredible and even my kiddos went crazy over it!
I chose to serve ours over canned biscuits because we were having it for dinner and I was pressed for time. If you choose to make homemade biscuits, more power to you, it’ll be great either way!!
The country style gravy was perfectly seasoned with pepper and was the perfect consistency. I made some hash browns to go with our dinner and we all had happy tummies.
Thanks to the Instant Pot, we had a quick, flavorful, and simple dinner on the table in no time! The leftovers reheated perfectly for breakfast the next morning, so it was a double win!
Hope you enjoy!

Instant Pot Sausage Gravy

- 1 lb pork sausage
- 3 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup flour
- 3 cups milk
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup Omit if using the maple flavored pork sausage
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper I use a bit more, so season to taste
Instructions
- On your Instant Pot, hit the saute function and add the sausage once display reads "hot".
- Cook sausage until no longer pink, about 4 minutes.
- Add in the unsalted butter and allow to melt.
- Sprinkle flour over meat and stir to incorporate. Allow to cook for about 1 minute.
- Add in the milk, maple syrup, salt, and pepper. Stir.
- Turn off saute function and place lid securely on top.
- Ensure valve is to sealing position.
- Cook mixture on manual, high pressure, for 2 minutes.

Can the recipe be double in the 6qt?
Kristin
Yep! This doubles perfectly in the 6 quart!

LOVE this recipe, however, I too get the burn notice EVERY. SINGLE. TIME! I scrape the bottom then turn to sauté to thicken up. Still tastes fine.
Kristin
It can be a little tricky to get it down. I have burned it a few times as well, and then the next time turns out perfectly. I am still trying to figure that one out! Glad it tastes good though!

Can I double the recipe if I have an 8 quart?
Kristin
Absolutely! Should work great! Just keep the time the same!

Couldn’t give it a full 5 stars simply because like a few others stated, I got my first ever dreaded “burn” on my attempt.
I followed the directions to a T and I’m thinking their needs to be a bit more liquid in the bottom the pot when the flour is added, that’s I think what made my burn happen.
I just shut it down and scrapped the bottom real good, than gave it another go. And it was perfect!
We normally use the store bought packs of gravy mix and do it on the stove, but I like this better. As long as I can avoid the burn haha
Made a delicious dinner last night.
My 6 year old loves his biscuits and gravy. And he had 2 plates.
So you have his approval!
Kristin
Sorry to hear you received the dreaded burn notice. Glad you were able to salvage it though and it ended up being a hit!

I’ve made this 3 times and while it is DELICIOUS, I get the burn notice every time. I follow the instructions exactly so I dont know what’s going on. Probably going to play with it a bit and hopefully avoid it from happening in the future.
Kristin
Glad its delicious, but so weird why that keeps happening!! I’ll go ahead and try this again myself in the next few days and try to troubleshoot for you!

I paired this along with a slow-cooker, overnight biscuits recipe this morning and am happy to report complete success in providing a HOME COOKED, quick, easy, warm and hearty meal for my wife and child before they leave for work and school!
Extremely pleased!
Kristin
Yea! I love hearing that! And slow cooker biscuits? Wow! Sounds tasty!!

I would omit the maple syrup and add seasoning salt. That is how the Pioneer woman makes hers and it is so good.
Kristin
Try it with the Maple Syrup, it adds just a hint of sweetness which really helps it! With or without, its tasty though! Enjoy!

I made this, this morning and it was delicious!! Thank you for the recipe.
Kristin
Yea! Glad you enjoyed it!!
lisa
Nice recipe! I swapped out the syrup for 2 sliced of bacon. #yummy
Kristin
Ooooo, bacon makes EVERYTHING better! Great thinking! Glad you enjoyed it!
Cassie
I have tried this twice and even tried browning the sausage in a skillet and it still gives me the burn message .
Kristin
Hmmm, I don’t know why that would happen. I just made it again this morning as is and it was great. You’re stirring everything together prior to high pressure? As long as the 3 cups liquid are in there, it shouldn’t be giving that message. Walk me through what you are doing exactly and I will try to trouble shoot for you! You’ll love this if we can get that darn message not to pop up! Sorry about it!!
Terry Smith
Sounds good except for the maple syrup.
Kristin
It just adds a slight sweetness to it, you can definitely omit though!
