I don’t know about you, but when I was younger and Uncrustables came out, I immediately begged my mom to buy a box. One package in and I was hooked. Something about the soft bread, circular shape, and grape jelly filling. We kept them in the freezer to make them frozen uncrustables which would thaw just in time for lunch and still be chilled. Now that I have kids of my own, we have a sandwich cutter that does pretty much the same thing, but this deep fried version is an occasional treat we love to make due to the crispy addition to the classic peanut butter jelly sandwich.

Ingredient Notes for Fried Uncrustables Sandwiches

    • Uncrustables– you’ll find these in the freezer section of your local grocery store. Any flavor works, my kids love the grape and strawberry flavor! Allow them to thaw slightly.
    • Pancake Mix– I use Bisquick, however, any brand works.
    • Eggs– you’ll need 2 large eggs at room temperature.
    • Milk– use whatever you have on hand. I use 2% because that is what we drink, but whole milk or any other type works as well.
    • Oil– this is for frying so you can use peanut, canola, avocado, etc. I use canola oil or vegetable oil as I almost always have it on hand.
    • Powdered Sugar– you can sprinkle on top. Optional, but not only does it make them look pretty, but it also adds an additional sweetness.
    • Additional Toppings– you can top these with strawberries, cherries, drizzle chocolate, hot fudge, sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture, crushed Oreos, etc. So many great ways to make these your own.

all the ingredients needed to make fried uncrustables.

How to make Deep Fried Uncrustables

    1. Add the pancake mix, eggs, milk, and 1 ½ tablespoon oil to a large mixing bowl.
    2. Whisk until well combined. *You’ll most likely have small lumps, that is totally fine.
    3. Place remaining oil into a large skillet  or dutch oven and heat up to about 375-400 degrees (medium heat). *to test if oil is hot enough, drop a few drop of water into the oil. If they boil, the oil is ready.
    4. Place a wood skewer through your uncrustable or use a fork and fully submerge the sandwich into the pancake batter. Ensure both sides are fully coated.
    5. Gently place coated sandwich into heated oil and fry about 2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
    6. Remove from oil and place onto a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
    7. Serve on a plate and dust with powdered sugar just before serving. Add additional toppings is desired.

step by step on how to make deep fried uncrustable sandwiches.

How to make Air Fried Uncrustables

Don’t want to deep fry these? No problem! Air Fryer Uncrustables are just as easy and delicious!

    • Place unwrapped uncrustables into air fryer basket and cook for about 8-10 minutes at 390 degrees. Flip over half way through to make them crispy on both sides.
    • If you want, you can give each side a light spray of avocado oil. This makes them even crispier.

    Topping Suggestions and Dip Options

    • If serving these as a breakfast treat, you can serve them with pancake syrup.
    • You can dip them into melted peanut butter, honey, flavored yogurt, or hazelnut spread.
    • Add fresh strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or cherries on top.
    • Sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top in place of the powdered sugar.
    • For a chocolate addition, sprinkle chocolate chips on top while still warm so they melt, or drizzle chocolate sauce on top.

    Tips and Tricks for Success

    • Do NOT place frozen uncrustables into the hot oil. Allow the sandwiches to thaw slightly otherwise the oil will splatter and could cause burning.
    • Allow to cool off for a few minutes before serving as the inside of the sandwiches will be extremely hot. I like to cut ours in half to allow them to cool off faster for my kids.
    • Experiment with all the flavors offered from Uncrustables. I believe they have peanut butter honey, Nutella, and different flavors of the jelly.
    • If you don’t want to purchase boxed Uncrustables, you can easily make these homemade using a sandwich cutter to fully seal the inside. Prepare your pbj using bread, peanut butter, and jelly. Cut and seal using a sandwich cutter and move on with the rest of the recipe as written.
