Spooky Jello Worms

October 31, 2014 by Kristin 2 Comments

Last night, I decided to look through Pinterest in hopes of making a spooky snack to bring to a Halloween play date. I had already made my candy corn pretzel kisses, so I wanted something fun, but simple. When I came across these worms, I knew it was a must try. Since I already had a box of black raspberry jello in the house, all I needed to get was the straws and gelatin. I ran to the store, came home to make these, and they were ready for chilling in no time. This morning before bringing the kids to the bus stop, I took these out of the fridge and removed them from the straws. My kids took one look at them and ran screaming down the hall, ha-ha. After I explained about 10,000 times that they were NOT real, just jello, my oldest kiddo was finally willing to try one. After my other two kids saw the oldest eating one, they too tried them. They talked about how their mom was “so cool” at the bus stop, and then the kids at the Halloween play date enjoyed them too. All in all, these were the perfect spooky treat to make. If you are feeling extra creative, crush up some Oreo’s and serve these worms on top to make it look like dirt and worms, 🙂

Enjoy and have a spooky Halloween!!!

Ingredients:

  • 1 box (6 oz) black raspberry jello
  • 3 envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • 3 cups boiling water
  • 3/4 cup whipping cream
  • 100 straws (the bendy kind work best)
  • rubber band

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the black raspberry jello, unflavored gelatin, and boiling water.
  2. Allow to completely dissolve gelatin and stir well.
  3. Place bowl into refrigerator to chill for about 20 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, gather the straws and place a rubber band securely around them to hold them into place.
  5. Place the straws into a tall, slender container. (I used a glass vase, however, you can also use a milk carton, orange juice container, etc.)
  6. Once the gelatin mixture is cooled slightly, mix the whipping cream in.
  7. Pour mixture evenly into the straws.
  8. Place container into the refrigerator and allow to chill for at least 8 hours. (I chilled overnight and it worked great)
  9. To remove jello from straws, run straws under warm water for about 20 seconds. Starting from the top of the straw, squeeze the straw down until the “worm” slides out.
  10. Place into a bowl or onto a plate and enjoy!! *If not serving right away, keep chilled in refrigerator
