Instructions
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain excess grease.
Stir in the onion and bell pepper. Cook 3-4 minutes, until softened.
Add the ketchup, mustard, vinegar, sugar, cloves, and salt. Stir until combined.
Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
Spoon onto hamburger buns and serve warm.
Notes
For slow cooker sloppy joes: Brown the beef first, then transfer everything to a slow cooker and cook on low for 2-3 hours.
If the mixture is too thin, simmer uncovered longer to help thicken the sauce.
This homemade sloppy joe mixture can be refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
