What makes a good peach cobbler?
With so many recipes out on the internet, it may be hard to choose the right recipe to try. Here are some good tips and things to look for.
- Homemade Crust– the key to the BEST cobbler is using a homemade crust. Yes, you can use shortcuts and use pie crust or make a Bisquick crust, however, you just can’t beat homemade. This one uses butter in it versus milk, so its golden, buttery, and oh so yummy!
- Peaches– some recipes call for frozen, others call for canned, but fresh is my preferred method! The fresh juices and flavor throughout just cannot be beat!
- Peach Syrup– this may just be my most favorite part of cobbler. Something about the spices and juices combining into a magical flavor concoction. With the cinnamon, nutmeg, sugars, and peaches combined…the syrup it creates is mouthwatering!

How to make Easy Southern Peach Cobbler
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees so you can get started on other things while it warms up.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced peaches, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch—this is going to be your irresistible peach cobbler filling.
- Now, pour the peach mixture into a two-quart baking dish or pan and bake in the oven for 10 minutes.
- In a separate, medium bowl, combine the flour, white sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt to create the ultimate flour mixture. Mix in the unsalted butter by using your hands or pastry blender. You will want the mixture to resemble coarse meal once combined.
- Stir in water until thoroughly combined.
- Remove the peaches from the oven and drop spoonful of the topping on top.
- In a small bowl, combine the white sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle the cinnamon mixture on top of the peaches with the dough topping.
- Next, place it back into the oven and bake for an additional 30 minutes—or until golden brown!
- After it’s done, serve it up warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Although this could just be a personal preference, I think Ice cream makes for the perfect cobbler topping each and every time!
How to Peel Peaches
The easiest way to peel your peaches is to place them into boiling water for about 30 seconds, followed by placing them into a 30 second ice bath. This will loosen the peach skin and allow it to easily be peeled for this cobbler recipe. The process is called blanching. Use a small knife to peel and the skin should just fall off. Be warned, they get quite slippery when peeled.
Storing Leftover for Southern Peach Cobbler
If you’re lucky enough to have leftovers of this tasty cobbler, place in an airtight container and place in refrigerator. Leftovers should last about 4 days. If freezing, place leftovers in a freezer safe container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw and reheat in the microwave using 30 second increments until desired temperature is reached.
Serving Suggestions
If you’ve ever had cobbler, you know its not a slice and serve. It’s more a scoop and serve. Perfect to enjoy when scooped into bowls and topped with a some tasty ice-cream. The best flavor to compliment this cobbler is vanilla, but of course any flavor works great! The hot cold temperature combination in this dessert is my favorite part. If you aren’t an ice-cream fan, no worries, this is great on its own too! Or, you can add additional peach slices, whipped cream, caramel sauce, etc.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use frozen peaches in this recipe?
Sure can! If using frozen, make sure you allow them to thaw and drain so they don’t add too much additional liquid to the cobbler.
Do canned peaches work in place of the fresh peaches?
Absolutely! It’s a great way to save on time. Be sure to fully drain and pat them dry.
How can I tell if my peaches have gone bad?
The softer the peach gets, this means it is going bad. If it turns brown, starts oozing, or smelling a bit rotten, be sure not to use those in this recipe. The perfect peaches should be slightly firm, with no bruising, etc. Freestone Peaches are known to be the best for baking. They easily peel once blanched and offer the perfect amount of sweetness.
Is peach cobbler a Southern thing?
Peach cobbler is a classic American dessert with a long history. Its exact origin is unknown, but it is believed to have been created in the American South in the early 19th century. Today, peach cobbler is a traditional dessert served in the Deep South, usually accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Do I have to peel my peaches or can I skip that part?
This works as the skin does get soft and dissolves away from the peach a bit, however, I am texture sensitive, so I prefer peeling. If you don’t mind a little course texture throughout from the skin, skip the peeling and simply slice your peaches for this recipe.
Tips for Success
- Place a cookie sheet under the pan while baking to prevent the cobbler from spilling over and making a mess in your oven. No one wants to clean an oven after enjoying a bowl of this!
- Make sure your peaches are ripe. This will help them add the perfect amount of sweetness to the dish.
- This recipe is best when the cobbler is golden brown, this ensures the crust is crisp and the perfect texture.
- If you prefer your cobbler not as sweet, feel free to cut sugar in half.

Although I haven’t tried it personally, I don’t see why that wouldn’t work great! Perhaps apples or blueberries!
