    Philly Cheesesteak Sliders

    Try this delicious and easy recipe for Philly Cheesesteak Sliders, a perfect addition to any game day menu or weeknight dinner. With thinly sliced steak, melted provolone cheese, and sautéed bell peppers and onions, these cheese sliders are sure to be a hit with everyone!

    Sliders are one of my favorite things to make when hosting game day, needing a quick appetizer/meal, or feeding a crowd. There are so many variety options from Cheeseburger Sliders, Easy Sloppy Joe Sliders, Chicken Bacon Ranch Sliders, or classic French Onion Beef Sliders. This Cheesesteak Sliders recipe may not be an authentic duplicate of the famous Philly recipe, however, it is a shortcut version that includes the same great flavor that everyone loves.

    What is a Philly Cheesesteak?

    If you’ve never had a classic Philly Cheese steak, you are in for a treat! A cheesesteak is a sandwich made from thinly sliced pieces of beefsteak and melted cheese in a long hoagie roll. A popular regional fast food, it has its roots in the United States city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The original cheesesteak was credited to Pat and Harry Olivieri, two brothers who ran a hot dog stand near South Philadelphia’s Italian Market. Legend has it that in the 1930s, the brothers wanted to offer new sandwiches. Their new item was grilled beef and onions in a toasted roll. From there, it has evolved into a fan favorite with so many variations available all over the country.

    What type of steak is best for an easy Philly cheesesteak?

    Typically, thinly sliced ribeye steak is used. I have seen other recipes that make chicken cheesesteak, use different cuts of beef and steak, etc. however, I have found rib-eye to be my favorite. Ribeye is the best cut of beef for a Philly cheesesteak because of its rich flavor and marbling throughout. If you do need to substitute due to budget or availability, you can use top round, skirt, flat iron, or sirloin steak.

    Cheesesteak Slider Ingredients Needed

    Below is a brief overview of each ingredient needed. To see printable recipe card with full recipe, scroll to the bottom of this post.

    • Olive Oil– you’ll use this to saute the onions and chopped bell pepper.
    • Onion– yellow onion or white onion work great, thinly sliced.
    • Bell Pepper– I like to use a green bell pepper, however, any color works great.
    • Ribeye Steak– thinly sliced or shaved steak, you can have your local butcher or grocery store deli slice it for you to keep it easy.
    • Worcestershire Sauce– a little goes a long way and really adds to the flavor.
    • Garlic Powder– you’ll use this to season the steak. Feel free to use fresh minced garlic if preferred.
    • Salt/ Black Pepper– season to taste.
    • Hawaiian Rolls– these are perfectly sweet and fluffy and are my go-to roll when making sliders. I buy the original or butter flavored 12 count.
    • Provolone Cheese– you’ll need 6-8 slices provolone cheese, however, you can also use American cheese or Pepper Jack.
    • Butter– unsalted butter or salted butter works, be sure to melt it as this will be brushed on top of the slider sandwiches.
    • Parsley– you’ll combine this with the melted butter to brush on top of each roll.
    • Mayonnaise– optional, spread this onto the underside of the top bun for an added flavor boost and creamy addition.

    How to make Philly Cheesesteak Sliders

    1. Thinly slice the onion and bell pepper.
    2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper, kosher salt, and pepper, and cook until tender and browned, about 6 to 9 minutes.
    3. Add the steak, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce, and cook until the steak is fully cooked, about 3 to 4 minutes.
    4. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
    5. Without separating the buns, slice the Hawaiian sweet rolls horizontally with a serrated knife to separate the tops from the bottoms.
    6. Place the bottom half on a parchment-lined baking sheet for easy cleanup. Spread the meat mixture evenly over the buns, then top with a layer of provolone cheese. Place the top buns back on. (Optional: spread mayonnaise on the underside of the top buns.)
    7. Melt the butter in a microwave safe small bowl and stir in the chopped parsley. Brush this butter mixture over the top buns.
    8. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown and heated through.
    9. Remove from the oven and serve immediately. Enjoy!

    Expert Tips

    • If preferred, you can make these cheese steak sliders in a 9×13 inch baking dish instead of a baking sheet.
    • These Philly sliders are best enjoyed fresh from the oven, so try to time them for when your guests or family want to eat them.
    • If you don’t like Hawaiian rolls or simply don’t have access to slider buns, try my homemade buttery bread machine rolls for a tasty alternative. They resemble Texas Roadhouse rolls!
    • If you like peppers, you can use two green bell peppers versus just one. Or try adding in a different color pepper like red, yellow, or orange with the green peppers.
    • For a quick shortcut, you can use shaved roast beef in place of the ribeye steak. It will alter the texture and flavor of the Philly cheesesteaks, but still be delicious.
    • If you love mushrooms, saute some with the onions and peppers.

    What to serve with Philly Cheese Sliders

    The best part of this recipe is how it fits just about any occasion. Whether you are serving as an appetizer as is, or serving for a quick meal option and need quick options to pair with it. Here are some of our favorites:

    Storing Philly Cheesesteak Sliders

    • Although these are best enjoyed fresh from the oven, leftovers are just as tasty too. Allow to fully cool before placing in an airtight container. These are good in the fridge for up to 4 days.
    • To reheat, place sliders in the oven at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes, or you can microwave for about 1 minute. You can also reheat in the air fryer at 350 degrees for a few minutes. You may want to cover with aluminum foil though to prevent them from getting too browned.

    Ingredients
      

    • 1 tablespoon olive oil

    Instructions
     

    • Thinly slice the onion and peppers.
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add in the onion, bell pepper, salt, and pepper cooking until tender and golden brown, about 6-9 minutes.
    • Add in the sliced ribeye, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and cook until the steak is fully cooked, about 4 minutes.
    • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and without separating the buns, slice them horizontally to separate the tops from the bottoms.
    • Place the bottom half on a parchment lined baking sheet. Spread the meat mixture evenly over the buns, top with a layer of provolone cheese, and place the top buns back on to create a sandwich. *If using mayonnaise, spread on the underside of the top buns before placing on top of cheese.
    • Melt the butter in a microwave safe bowl and stir in the chopped parsley. Brush this mixture over the tops of the buns.
    • Bake in preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until top of buns of golden brown.
