Why this recipe is our favorite
This easy BBQ chicken recipe is completely no fail. The chicken comes out perfectly tender and flavorful each and every time!
Only a few ingredients are needed to prepare this! Chicken, BBQ sauce, rolls, and cabbage slaw (optional).
You can prepare the chicken ahead of time and assemble when needed! In fact, this chicken can be prepared up to 3 days before needed and stored in the refrigerator!
Ingredient Notes
Below is a brief overview of each ingredient needed to make this pulled BBQ chicken slider recipe! To see printable recipe card with exact amounts and directions, scroll to the bottom of this post.
- Chicken– boneless skinless chicken breast
- BBQ Sauce– use your favorite type, this coats the chicken and gives the sliders great flavor. Spicy, sweet, hickory, original, and more all work!
- Hawaiian Rolls– King’s Hawaiian Rolls are our go to for these sliders due to the hint of sweet they bring and fluffy texture. Any slider rolls will work if you aren’t a fan of the sweet rolls.
- Butter– unsalted butter gets melted and brushed on top of the sliders just before they go into the oven.
Coleslaw
This homemade coleslaw is a delicious way to kick up the flavor of these easy BBQ chicken sliders! If you want to keep things simple, feel free to use bagged coleslaw and omit this homemade version entirely.
- Green Cabbage/ Purple Cabbage/ Carrots– shredded. You can buy the pre-bagged mixture or chop it yourself.
- Salt/ Black Pepper/ Paprika– season to taste.
- Sour Cream– you can also use plain Greek yogurt if desired.
- Lemon Juice– freshly squeezed is best.
- Mayonnaise– this gives the coleslaw mixture its creaminess and tangy flavor.
Substitutions and Variations
If you want to use Rotisserie chicken and skip the crock pot altogether, that works too. Simply shred the chicken, pour desired BBQ sauce on top and toss to coat. Proceed with homemade coleslaw as directions.
Boneless chicken thighs are a great option to use in place of the chicken breast.
Have fun with the toppings and use sliced pickles, onions, pineapple chunks, sliced tomatoes, sweet corn, French Fried Onions, lettuce, a splash of hot sauce, etc.
If you love homemade BBQ sauce, feel free to use it in this recipe. Homemade versions allow you to control the ingredients and flavors added. For more sweetness, add in some brown sugar as this is the base to a lot of tasty BBQ sauces.
In place of slider rolls, you can also use wraps, hamburger buns, or enjoy on its own on a bed of lettuce for a BBQ chicken salad.
What type of bun is best for this BBQ chicken?
Hawaiian Rolls are by far our favorite as they are fluffy, perfectly sweet, and easy to slice. However, you can use any type of roll such as a hamburger bun, dinner roll, turn it into a wrap, etc. The possibilities are endless. PRO TIP: Slice the Hawaiian rolls as a whole versus doing so individually. Simply slice through the center horizontally using a sharp knife and remove the top bun layer to create sliders.
What type of BBQ sauce do you recommend?
Any type works, if you desire a sweet BBQ sauce, use it! Want some heat, go the spicy route. Perhaps even chipotle!
Our go to favorite sauce is Sweet Baby Ray’s! From sweet and smoky notes of hickory to the perfect balance of sweetness and heat in the Sweet ‘n Spicy version, you can find lots of different options to choose from!
Storing Slow Cooker Chicken Sliders
Store leftover pulled chicken in an airtight container in your fridge. It will keep for up to five days. You can also freeze the BBQ chicken in a freezer safe container or bag up to 3 months. Thaw before reheating and serving!
