If you go to my homepage and type in cocktails, you’ll notice quite the collection. My hubby and I started playing around with concoctions about a year or so ago and have built quite the collection. One of the most common drinks we see out in restaurants is the Moscow Mule. I’m the kind of gal that prefers sweet drinks, more fruity tasting than liquor, and stick to what I know. My hubby is the experimenter. He’ll try anything at least once. Just the other weekend, he tried a peanut butter old fashioned. No thank you, right?? BUT he actually said it was good and although not his new fav, something he would try again!
Well, a few months back, we found a great deal on copper mugs. We bought a few to add to the collection, but never got around to actually trying our hand at making one.
Last weekend, that all changed, and boy am I glad I stepped out of my bubble to try something new. I was surprisingly a huge fan of these! I had been making dinner when he prepared these and although I was hesitant at first, one sip in, I was hooked!

The copper mug was a fun twist to sip is out of and after looking up the reasoning behind serving it in a copper mug online, I was even more impressed. From what I read, this drink dates back to around 1940 and its often served in a copper mug due to temperature. The copper quickly takes on the temperature of the cocktail and the rim becomes chilly almost instantly. Hence why this is a refreshing drink option!
We used the limes from our lime tree out back, which was even more fun knowing it was homegrown.
What is a Moscow Mule
A Moscow mule is a cocktail made with vodka, spicy ginger beer and lime juice, garnished with a slice or wedge of lime. The drink is a type of buck and is sometimes called a vodka buck. The Moscow mule is popularly served in a copper mug, which takes on the cold temperature of the liquid.
Where did the name come from?
The name was decided as Moscow Mule, which is said to have been a random pick. Apparently, Moscow was used because of Americans’ tendency to associate vodka with Russia and Mule was added to the name because the ginger beer gave a ‘kick’ of flavor.
Ingredients Needed for this Classic Moscow Mule
Vodka- feel free to use whichever brand you prefer
Lime- fresh is best if possible
Ginger Beer- try to look for a Ginger Beer with no artificial flavors or sweeteners
*See recipe card below for exact measurements
How to prepare this tasty cocktail
Fill a Copper Mug with crushed ice.
Pour the Vodka, lime juice, and beer over the ice and stir a bit.
Garnish with lime wedge and enjoy!
Why are Moscow mules served in copper mugs?
Copper is very good at conducting temperature, so when an ice-cold mule is poured inside, the glass actually takes on that temperature and keeps the drink frosty cold longer. However, it actually started as a marketing scheme back in the 1940’s to sell more Copper mugs, Vodka, and ginger beer. The trend stuck around and became a staple of the classic cocktail.
*If you don’t have a copper mug, don’t fret. You can use a standard mug, lowball glass, etc.
All in all, it’s safe to say we have officially added Classic Moscow Mules to our rotation! Hope you enjoy just as much, but of course, please drink responsibly!
