I’ll admit it — the first time I heard “blueberry dump cake,” I cringed. Dump what now? But then I watched my grandma toss it together like it was no big deal — and when I took that first bite, I got it. Sweet, warm blueberries bubbling under a golden, buttery cake top? Oh yes, I was sold. It’s the kind of dessert that looks simple, but feels like a hug from the past. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream it’s the ultimate sweet treat!

    What is Dump Cake?

A dump cake is a simple American dessert with fruit on the bottom and a buttery, cake-like topping. It’s called a dump cake because you just dump the ingredients straight into the pan—no mixing required. There are so many variations available to try from a Cherry Dump Cake, Apple Dump Cake, Peach Dump Cake, and more! Of course, I also have a yummy Death by Chocolate Dump Cake and Chocolate Peanut Butter Dump Cake to try out, but it’s not a typical fruit based dump cake and requires just a few extra mixing steps. Just as delicious, but not considered a classic “dump cake recipe”.

    Ingredients Needed

Below is a brief overview of each ingredient needed to make this easy blueberry dump cake recipe. To see printable recipe card with exact amounts and directions, scroll to the bottom of this post or click the “jump to recipe” button at the top.

    • Blueberries– I recommend using fresh blueberries for this recipe versus frozen blueberries due to the added liquid from the frozen berries, however, frozen berries work great too and won’t need to be thawed as they’ll quickly defrost once baked in oven.
    • Sugar– white granulated sugar adds an extra sweetness to this cake.
    • Cinnamon– ground cinnamon adds a warm spice that pairs perfectly with the blueberries.
    • Cake Mix– I use yellow cake mix, however, you can also use spice cake, lemon cake mix, or white cake mix for a yummy variation. I use the 15.25 ounce boxes of cake mix.
    • Butter– you’ll need melted butter, salted butter or unsalted butter works great.

How to Make This Easy 5-Ingredient Blueberry Dump Cake

Prep the oven. You’ll want to preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9×13 baking dish. Assemble the cake. Mix the blueberries, sugar, and cinnamon in your greased pan.

Pour melted butter on top of the cake mix coating entire surface, don’t stir. Bake and serve. Place pan into preheated oven to bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and serve warm in bowls with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

    Storing Leftovers

Once cooled, you can store your dump cake covered with plastic wrap or aluminum foil in the fridge for up to 7 days. You can also transfer to an airtight container if you don’t want to store the pan in your refrigerator. To freeze, place in a freezer safe container up to 3 months. Allow to thaw before serving. To reheat, place serving in microwave to heat in 30 second increments until heated through. This cake can be served hot or cold.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use pie filling in place of the blueberries?

Yes! If you have blueberry pie filling on hand, you can use that in place of the fresh blueberries. You will need 2 cans to coat the bottom of the pan in an even layer.

Do I need to do any stirring of this cake?

Nope! Short of mixing the sugar, cinnamon, and blueberries, no stirring is required. Simply dump the cake mix on top, spread the melted butter around, and bake! Easy peasy!

Can I use any pie filling to change it up?

Absolutely! Feel free to use peach, apple, cherry, blueberry, strawberry, and any other flavor pie filling in place of the blueberries.
