Cookin’ Chick Favorites

I decided to start a once a month post, in which I highlight a few of my kitchen must haves. There are several things I use on a daily basis that people may not have on hand. With Mother’s Day coming up, this is a good post for hubbys/children/etc that may need ideas for the special lady in their life.

This month, I picked three practical, inexpensive items that I use ALL THE TIME!! My pineapple corer/slicer, silicone muffin cups, and avocado peeler/slicer. Whether I am serving fresh fruit with our meal, baking muffins, or making guacamole/salad, those three items are definitely used tons!

Pineapple Corer/Slicer: About two years ago, my hubby and I were walking through our grocery store when we came across this. It was on sale for $3 and I decided to try it. We bought  a fresh pineapple and used this on it. Not only was it incredibly simple to use, but the slices were cut perfectly, it left a cute pineapple “cup” you can serve summer cocktails out of, and the kids could even use it. We have had several pineapples with our meals since then and use it each and every time! In the summer, we make fun drink and serve them inside the cut pineapple. Of course, the kids love that too!

Silicone Muffin Cups: Have you ever decided to make muffins, only to find out you don’t have muffin cups and don’t want to go through the hassle of hand greasing each tin? That was me before I bought these muffin cups. I was a little hesitant about them at first only because I didn’t know how they would work. Turns out, they work amazing. You can get them fairly inexpensive and never have to buy paper muffin liners again. Once used, put them in the dishwasher, top rack, and that’s it! They easily slide off the cooked muffin, leave pretty lines in the sides of the muffin as paper ones do, and are a good money saver!!

Avocado Peeler/Slicer: My brother got this for me for Christmas this past year and I am hooked. This handy gadget easily removes the seed, slices/dices the avocado, and peels it. I used to take a knife to cut the avocado up and every time I went to remove the seed, it either plopped onto my floor, cracked in half, or the knife got stuck in it. With this tool, the seed easily slides out and it dices the avocado perfectly for salads, guacamole, toppings, etc.
