Amarula Coffee Milkshake

This adult milkshake is creamy, simple to prepare, has a coffee flavoring, and is made using Amarula…a South African cream liqueur.

My hubby and I are big dessert fans. Anytime we can enjoy a little sweet treat in the evenings, we most definitely will. Now that it is summer here in Houston, we have been trying more ice-cream type desserts as a way to stay cool from the heat. Anything from sundaes, floats, slushies, and these tasty milkshakes.

One of my hubby’s coworkers lived in South Africa with his wife and moved to the United States within the last year or two. We recently had them over for dinner and they brought a bottle of Amarula. Now, I had never heard of it before, but when they said it is similar to Bailey’s, I knew I would love it.

Amarula is a South African liqueur made with sugar, cream, and the fruit of the African marula tree (also called the elephant tree or marriage tree). They told us a funny story about how the fruit grows on the trees and elephants/monkeys eat it and sometimes become tipsy, hehe!

Since my hubby and I were anxious to try it, we decided to try a bit over crushed ice. It definitely is similar to Bailey’s and we enjoyed the sweet drink. A few evenings later, my hubby got the idea to use it in a coffee milkshake. After adding a few ingredients, we blended everything together and let me tell you, these adult milkshakes are quite tasty.

The coffee, Amarula, and chocolate mixed together is a Heavenly combination and our new favorite sweet treat to enjoy in the evenings! I highly recommend trying this out. You’ll find Amarula at your local liquor store near the other liqueur’s.

Hope you enjoy!!
